How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve been a Wellness Plan member for 2 pets now for many years (my dog who has now passed and my current dog). Overall, I feel like the staff at locations are kind, the services are good, and it has been worth it. Our dog had an appointment a couple of weeks ago for a general checkup and the vet found that he had an ear infection. They scheduled a follow up after having us medicate his ear for 10 days. Upon return from being out of town, I called multiple days before the appointment to ask if we could switch the appointment from a drop-off to a standard appointment where I sit with him. They didn’t have any availability for the original day but stated they could see him that Saturday at 2 and I took it. My husband and I brought our dog in for his scheduled time and were met with an employee working the front desk with a cold tone telling us we had no appointment at that location. When I stated that I spoke to someone on the phone to schedule it (for that location) and asked her to check, she explored further. She then stated our appointment had been cancelled due to lack of communication on our end. I pulled out my phone and asked if she could tell me when the voicemail was left as I didn’t see one, and she would not give further details. I then asked if there was any way to squeeze us in as we were just having our dog’s ear checked as a quick follow up. She stated it could be possible but likely not and would not ask anyone if it was even an option. Her tone was condescending and we felt as if we had to ask what was next, or possible outcomes to mediate the situation as she offered none . My husband also asked if the default was to automatically cancel our appointment after one missed call (which we couldn’t pinpoint) and she said yes. This visit was a real letdown as a loyal customer and we feel as though the employee working (10/25/25) clearly did not care through her unpleasant tone, demeanor, and lack of willingness to help. It might just be this location, but we are reconsidering our business with Banfield.

Highly recommend this location for all our pet babies. The staff here are all very efficient and informative. My bull terrier has been suffering from allergies and I was given options and information that other places have failed to provide I now feel like we can get this under control and im not just endlessly spending hundreds of dollars every month.

have a new kitten with an illness and I went to Banfield Phoenix N of AZ for the first time since I had a coupon for a free office visit. When the vet tech told me the prices, I told and showed her my coupon and she said she would remove the $73.95 office visit fee. I paid and left. I was most concerned with getting my kitten home and I trusted the vet tech took off the office visit charge since she said she would. There were multiple line items on my bill and I didn't notice until I got home that I was charged for the office visit. When I returned for my kitten's follow up, I explained what happened about the office visit fee. The check in lady, vet tech, and "back office" people refused to give me a credit even though it was their mistake that the charge was not removed when I showed my coupon on my first visit.  Another option is that they could not have changed be an office visit fee for my follow up, but they refused to do that as well. If you have a coupon for a free office visit, I recommend you thoroughly review your receipt before leaving, especially if you go for a pet illness.  I was so concerned with my kitten's illness/well-being and wanting to get her home, I was distracted from the bill and focused on what the vet tech told me I needed to do with my kitten's prescriptions. I feel Banfield took advantage of this to not honor my coupon and charge me for the office visit knowing I would not closely look at the long list of charges on the receipt when I was leaving Banfield.

The service barely covered anything except shots. I hadn't used the service for over a year. Then my cat died and I stopped the service but they kept attempting to charge, a year later they sent me to collections for non payment. Do not recommend
