How to Save Money at Bonded Hearts Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff and Dr Cooley at bonded hearts are super knowledgeable, professional and loving. I currently own a retired racing greyhound, multiple sport dogs and a service dog and I would trust Dr Cooley with all of them. She has so far treated both my American hairless and my performance/service dog whippet . It’s SO nice to finally have a trustworthy place in this area for my spoiled dogs.

We started taking our cat to Dr. Cooley over two years ago when she was at a different office and fell in love with how well she cared for us and for her. We then started taking our dog to her as well. Our cat had some long standing issues and Dr. Cooley did a fantastic job helping her extend her life for the past 2 years. She recently opened her own place, Bonded Hearts, and we followed her to it. It is well worth the 1 hour round trip drive out to see her, Sarah, and Paula. Sadly, we lost our cat this past week and the team at Bonded Hearts was there with us every step of the way. Alice, our cat, lived out the last 2 of her 14 years in our family as happy as she could be under the care of Dr. Cooley. We couldn’t have asked for a better team to help us through these past couple weeks and are patients for life with Dr. Cooley. The care we have received has been second to none. I challenge you to find a more caring, friendly vet anywhere in the Birmingham area, but I guarantee you won’t!

Dr.Cooley, Sarah and Paula are the literal best and I couldn't recommend this place more. We always feel so welcome as soon as we walk in and Dr.Cooley is very very knowledgeable. She explains everything in detail what she is doing or what she recommends, which as a helicopter cat dad is very important 😂 I highly recommend Bonded Hearts! You won't be let down!!

Could not be MORE excited the amazing Dr Cooley has opened her OWN integrative (holistic & traditional) practice! SO glad she decided to call Birmingham home & even more excited she’s opened Bonded Hearts!! She has provided my 15 & 13yr old English & Llewellin Setters with acupuncture & chiropractic for the last couple years - it has made such an obvious difference in their overall health, vitality & range of motion - there is NOTHING better than to be able to physically watch your dog heavy sigh & let go of pain during the visit. It is amazing all the things acupuncture can treat (not just mobility!) Dr Cooley is not my regular vet (but if I ever lose mine, she will be!) but that has never stopped her from checking EVERY inch of my dogs on EVERY visit & calling any concerns she sees/feels to my attention. Most vets (esp ones you only see for specialist care) would NEVER take the time to do that - heck, you are lucky your regular vet does it! She is also trained in TCM herbs, which is & can be just as effective as pharmaceuticals, but safer & gentler on the body. In addition, the clinic & exam rooms are really fantastic - so full of light, yet so quiet & calming…..and Dr Cooley is extremely open & responsive to any questions you ask or concerns you have. If you aren’t happy with your regular vet, or are looking for supplemental support that WILL make a difference (& a vet who’ll get in the floor with your animal!) I HIGHLY recommend giving Bonded Hearts a try!! Sarah & Paula are fantastic, too!!

I cannot say enough about Dr. Cooley and the amazing staff! We have had three pets there, two have crossed the rainbow bridge and we could not have made it without Dr. Cooley and Paula! Alexander, our cat had a rare stomach issue she snatched him back from and he, and my former lab have received acupuncture. The treatment is nothing short of a miracle! This place is the BEST!!!
