How to Save Money at Shelby Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Shelby Animal Clinic loved our baby like their own. They didn't hesitate to work us in as a new patient. The veterinarian paid close attention to our questions & concerns, providing us with all the help & expertise needed. The staff went above & beyond. We were very pleased & especially love that they are open for Saturday appointments.

My first time taking my 7 week old Shih Tuz puppies. They were super nice and the office is clean. They offered me coffee or a bottle of water. Really busy, spent 1.5 waiting. They were so knowledgeable and explained everything to you. I like the paperwork they give for the puppies to keep up with all their care. I enjoyed seating there listening and watching the birds. They treat you like you have been going there for years. The building is easy to get to and get out of. When you're done the staff will carry your babies to your vehicle. I recommend them.

Slow, filthy, overpriced, rude, unprofessional, and incompetent. Dr Z told me that my 8 year old golden retriever needed surgery to remove a patch of skin that he has had since BIRTH. I was also told that we must bring him back in a week after paying $300 for the visit. We have a newborn and we have limited time and funds currently. His nails were not trimmed and the infection is back. I questioned her for not cutting his nails and she became unprofessional. She then refused treatment. I would not recommend your practice to anyone. Be careful going to this clinic.

READ THIS! BE AWARE OF THE POSITIVE REVIEWS---THEY ALL WERE SHORT AND GENERAL. HOWEVER THE 1 STAR REVIEWS WERE DETAILED AND WERE REAL. LOCALS IN ALABASTER KNEW THIS CLINIC IS THE PLACE THEY WOULD RUN AWAY FROM. PLEASE JUST READ THE 1 STAR REVIEWS. THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR GOOD REASON. I've spent almost $2000 in these 6 months in this vet. For what? my 2 dogs' skin infection which were treated with a couple of antibiotics and antihistamines. For one, they kept booking follow-up appointments which usually not necessary. But Dr. Z will always find something to "dig your money". Why I'm out here speaking out? Because today my dog just had a red eye for less than a day, and she prescribed 14 days of antibiotics, pain medications, and eye ointment. An $25 item appeared in my $325 bill which was never related to me. She ordered a thyroid panel that was $89 without even asking me. I usually write really nice reviews for people that I like, but I am too disgusted by how they do all the tests that they think were "necessary", meaning they didn't even asked me if I wanted my dogs to be tested for thyroid and then just handed me the bill. $325 for a red eye! DON'T EVEN COME HERE!!!!!!! I WISHED SOMEBODY HAD TOLD ME SO BEFORE I EVEN SPENT SO MUCH IN THIS MISERABLE PLACE. Additional note: I wasn't asked if I wanted a $89 thyroid panel for my dog, plus I didn't see if my dog's blood were withdrawn. I was not told what's included in the thyroid panel, and which lab was used for the test results. I didn't even know when the test results will come back! This feels like when I went to a restaurant and was held to pay for what I didn't order. Is this even legal?

Took my new fur baby to Dr. Z this morning and I definitely will be returning with my other babies! She was thorough and extremely helpful with my questions, most of the time answering them before I could even ask. I can also tell she has so much care for the health and well-being of my pet. Her staff were very sweet and helpful as well! Also bonus points for the cute bandana they put on her before bringing her back into the room. 💜
