How to Save Money at Susitna Animal Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Clinton and the team were pivotal in helping us say goodbye to our little girl IVY earlier this week. Ivy was and will always be our little girl that gave us so much of herself and we know in our hearts she is playing ball and eating Salmon upon request from God! Thank you again Susitna Animal care for helping us during our time of need, Barry and Jean Hamilton

I was at this brand new, amazing facility this week! It is a very warm and welcoming place. The staff are all friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I met the veterinarians and they are so compassionate and easy to work with. They completely understand that our pets are part of our family and so important to us. Susitna Animal Urgent Care is definitely a state of the art facility. It is clean, inviting, and well run. I will definitely be bringing my pets back here if the need arises. I recommend you do too. 🩷🐾🩷

The level of care and dedication this team shows is unmatched. The entire staff is warm, welcoming, and incredibly helpful. Dr. Wallace has treated our dog multiple times and is extremely thorough in treatment and takes the time to explain exactly what’s going on and what to expect next. Whether it’s a very large or small problem she addresses it with the same level of seriousness and expertise. I’d trust our pets with Dr. Wallace, Clinton, or Vollaro. They’re all highly skilled and compassionate. You can definitely trust that your pet is in the best hands at Susitna! Their website is also super helpful! it has all the essential information you need and does a great job at explaining how the urgent care process works. To top it off, with their brand new facility and equipment I’m confident we’re getting the best care possible. I recommend 💯

I can honestly say this facility was a huge disappointment and the visit I had was less then pleasing. Which given the reviews for this place that praises their friendliness and communication. I had an emergency where my 12 week old pup consumed something that caused them to look like they were having some neurological things going on. Called her vet, they reccommended this facility. I callled them ahead of time to inform them we were on our way. Explained the symptoms and informed them of who their vet was. Upon arrival, we were not met with friendliness. In fact they kept telling us to get out of the building. No real explanation, no signs indicating we needed to wait or that guns were allowed on the property, husband carries. But with an emergency and it never being an issue at past vets it was far from our mind. They lied and said my vet claimed my dog did not have her shots. WRONG, they just do not accept over the counter shots. Was informed of this when I was able to pull the records up on my phone and showed the paperwork witg the shots recorded on it. Weird cause never had a problem with it in the past. Then some lady came out and escalated the situation to tell us guns are not allowed even though no signs are there. Great, just wanted my dog treated. Still outside I called my dogs vet and inquired why they told them my dog had no shots to which they informed me that they had not told them that. When we FINALLY get into the office. The lady who made a big deal about the gun on my husband followed us in the room to harass my husband who showed her he did not have it on him. That was just the start of our visit, which I guess at that point I had to reason with my husband it could not get any worse. Inside it was just numbers being thrown at us, with ya practically begging them to do tests. They did manage to do a blood test to check for something but then they told me after the results came back that they were incunclusive. When brought up later i was informed the test could not be done. Great. Urine test same results. Finally they took her back to give her activated charcol and fluids. It definitely got my pup better. But the hostility and them escalting my husband who was scared for the puppy, was completely uncalled for. Also if you don't want guns in your facility in a state that has laws that allow you to carry, put up signs. I will say I had one great experience with one of the techs. She was really sweet and helpful through it. They also said they would call and check on my dog as well. Waited to see if they would and never got a call checking on her.

We had a stellar experience here. From the second you walk in the staff is incredibly welcoming and kind, the facility itself is spotless, and we waited no time at all. We saw Dr. Clinton and had all of our (many) questions answered thoughtfully- you can tell she cares about spending time with her patients and their humans. We'll be coming back here for all of our health testing and repro needs moving forward, it was worth the drive from Anchorage ten-fold.
