How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat got excellent care at VEG ER and I loved the open-plan, transparent, humane experience. It is *not* like other vets' offices where you wait for ages and then they take your pet in the back and treat them without you. When I called, I spoke with a vet right away on the phone (amazing) rather than being screened by a series of receptionists, techs, etc. Once I got to the facility, the wait time was really short, my cat and I stayed together the whole time, I could chat with other pet parents, and the vet was really caring and responsive to my cat's needs and my preferences for her treatment. When it was clear that my cat needed a surgical procedure that they couldn't do on-site, they got me a super-quick (i.e. next day) referral to a local vet who could do it. I will definitely be using VEG ER for emergency care in the future whenever my four legged family members need it!

I cannot say enough wonderful things about the team. From the moment my dog was admitted, every member of the staff showed exceptional compassion, professionalism, and dedication. A special thank you to Dr. Beverly, Dr. Helstein, Dr. Pope, and Dr. Sprando for their expertise, communication, and genuine care. The nurses and technicians were equally outstanding, providing attentive care, comfort, and reassurance throughout the entire stay. The entire team went above and beyond, delivering not only exceptional medical care but also kindness and compassion during a very stressful time. I am incredibly grateful for everything they did and would highly recommend them to anyone seeking care for their pet.

We brought our dog Lily in early on a Friday morning while on vacation in Vermont. The staff treated her promptly and gave clear directions for next steps / monitoring at home. When she did not improve, I brought her back in the evening for an additional evaluation and different meds. They adjusted the care plan and Lily is now on the mend. Everyone was extremely nice and treated Lily with the utmost care. They also sent her treatment/ diagnosis to my vet at home in case a follow up was needed. No one wants a sick dog on vacation but I'm so grateful a place like this was available! Thank you VEG! :)

So glad a place like this finally opened up around here. We brought our cat Oscar in because he was having gastrointestinal issues of an unknown origin. Right from the start the staff was friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. They offered snacks, drinks and coffee which was sweet because we were a bit distraught and this was a rough thing to do on a Saturday night. Dr. Melissa Helstein explained each procedure (bloodwork, ultrasound, hydration) and what the results meant and presented options with recommendations based on necessity versus cost, unlike some places that try to charge you as much as possible. We felt respected and they were gentle and sweet with our nervous guy. I didn’t catch her name but they have a “cat whisperer” there who was amazing! They also sent us home with clear instructions, specific foods, probiotics and anti-nausea medication and I felt like there were no unknowns or conflicting information. It’s not a place you ever want to need, but knowing it’s there makes all the difference. We left feeling like Oscar, and us with our frazzled anxiety, had been in the best possible hands.

We went Friday night with our cat who was in distress. Its interesting to see the open concept of the business. They were prompt with triage and tests after providing us a quote. All tests were for the most part inconclusive. They then put us in a room. They recommended 3 drugs to be administered there and 2 others at home. Then they forgot about us. Other pets that came in well after us were treated and sent on there way well before us. I know every situation is different. We had to remind them we were still waiting (they weren't waiting for any more results) and the head vet on duty was surprised we hadn't received the meds. Clearly someone dropped the ball. Then one of the meds the vet recommended they didnt have. Another one they said they could give as a pill was later (after we reminded them she didnt receive it as we were nearly on our way out the door) administered with what seemed like 2 oz of liquid and didnt go well. What cat enjoys having a syringe full of liquid being jammed in their mouth. They didnt hesitate to make sure they were paid, but they didnt provide any release paperwork, follow up notes or receipt or anything and said it would be emailed. We were told the probiotic would have to be ordered through amazon. Yet when we got home that is what was in one of the containers they sent us home with. This prescription the vet gave us to order was not the probiotic. It was something totally different. I called 3 hours after we left and they said we would receive discharge paperwork by email within the next few hous but we are now at 30 hours and still nothing. Even if they provided a website to log into for info that would be helpful. I need to follow up with my regular vet and have nothing. I understand they use doctors off site to read test results so maybe they are waiting on them but the delay is unacceptable and I feel that we should have been provided something when we left with perhaps a comment indicating we would receive a detailed follow up of the visit within the next x hours if they were waiting for something. The place wasnt overly busy only having 4 seemingly non critical clients at the most at the same time. So, initially the visit and attention was good, but overall after being there for 5 hours we have mixed feelings as they didn't seem too organized re: meds and vet tech wasnt able to follow through promptly and accurately with vets instructions. We had a bad experience at BEVS several years ago which is why we tried this place.
