How to Save Money at Neighborhood Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Very attentive and knowledgeable! I was greeted upon entry and they made me feel comfortable knowing that my dog is safe in their hands! Ordered blood work and got the info and medicine the very next day. Highly impressed!

Prioritize Money Over Pets. I took my cat here for a simple blood test, and it turned into a traumatic experience for her. It took them over an hour to try and draw blood, and they still couldn’t do it. My cat came out terrified, stressed, and aggressive—behaviors I’ve never seen from her, even after other vet visits. At another clinic, even though she was scared of the blood test, the vets knew exactly how to handle her, and they were able to draw her blood quickly, without causing her unnecessary distress. Here, they took her to a back room where I couldn’t see anything, and when she came back, she was in a terrible state. A vet should know how to handle cats, especially when they’re nervous, without causing so much fear and anxiety, but that wasn’t the case here. They also tried to charge an extra $88 to sedate her, something they never mentioned beforehand. On top of that, I was quoted $100 for the blood test over the phone, but in-person, they raised the price to $150. At other clinics, I’ve received the same tests and results much faster and for a much more reasonable price. This isn’t the first time they’ve overcharged without providing real solutions. Previously, they suggested an $800 plan for my cat when she was vomiting, but another vet fixed the problem with a simple medication and a blood test for a fraction of the price. This place seems more focused on upselling than actually caring for animals. The constant price increases and stressful environment for my cat make it impossible for me to trust them again. If you care about your pet’s well-being, I strongly recommend finding another vet.

From the moment I walked in with my pet, the front staff (Angela) helpful, attentive & welcoming. My dog took to her and appreciated the friendly attention. Same goes for all the staff, but especially the vet himself. It’s nice to find a place that loves what they do and wants the best care for my pet without breaking the bank.

Awesome vet services. They really care about your fur babies. Couldn’t ask for better service and I really appreciate all their help. They took care of my dogs tibia and now he’s feeling so much better. Thank y’all so much for all of your help and assistance.

Have taken 2 different foster pets to this vet—he is a great doctor and very personable and jolly personality. He is sweet with the dogs, doesn’t mind explaining things in a way you can understand. Charged a sneaky $30 xray interpretation that was useless and completed by AI. That was a bummer. The front desk gals seem to be very green and know very little about vet medicine—At drop off they don’t take note of relevant history to give to the doc (because they don’t know what’s important and what’s not) and when picking up the pup, they were unable to answer simple questions as asking what labs were done or when to start a med or what a medication is for. They have to go back and forth from the front to the back to ask the doctor each individual question. It wasn’t always like this—so I’m guessing there’s new staff. Techs are kind and personable and knowledgeable as well. Prices seem reasonable as well. Thankful to have a small business vet in the neighborhood vs the big kennel like operations that seem to have taken over
