How to Save Money at VCA Westside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just want to say thank you to the wonderful staff and in particular to Josie and Dr. Vanderford for how well they take care of my Luna. She is a frequent flyer (😩) and always still loves going to the vet. The level of care on follow ups and access to the Dr is nothing like I’ve ever experienced, and feels good to know that they care for her as much as I do!

Highly recommend VCA westside! Bo always loves going and seeing the friendly staff. They consistently take such great care of him. So thankful for the puppy plan membership! Dr. Vanderford was so knowledgeable, helpful and informative. The exam was very thorough and it's evident that he truly cares about your fur baby. Miranda is always very helpful to ensure the best vet experience and the reason we travel from an hour away to come to this vca location. 5 star experience!

We been using VCA for the past 5 years. Even when we moved we continued to take our fur babies to the same vet. Today I had an infuriating and sickening experience when my husky was brought back to me with cuts on his face, and all the Tech Amber had to say was that he might be stressed because he wasn’t very cooperative. When I asked about the cuts on his face and she pretended to not know, then eventually admitted to having to use strength on him cause he was not cooperating. Yes they have mostly good reviews, but pay attention to the “few” bad ones, because having your dog brought back with cuts on his face shouldn’t be a possibility. To top it all off they gave no care at all and were just trying to dismiss us. I don’t know if they have new staff or vets but avoid this place.

Staff very professional but actual Vet doctor doesn’t even deserve 1 star! My experience here was terrible the Veterinarian is a rude and extremely unprofessional. I was told she didn’t smell this disgusting smell that has been on my dog for past two weeks. Literally was talking to me as if I was incoherent and said she was going to going to argue with me? I feel she clearly didn’t know how to treat my dog and couldn’t say that she instead was rude and continued to tell me what she couldn’t smell and it’s not her fault she can’t smell what I smell. She said she can recommend dog food for allergies and meds and maybe they will work but she wasn’t convincing at all. I just left cause I didn’t feel wanted I would not think twice about bringing your pet here. This place is a hard NO for me!!! Never will ever go back!!

The worst experience. Arrived early for my appointment was taken to the exam room on time but was then made to wait AN HOUR for the doctor to come and take a look at my dog. She walks in says he has xyz medical term and starts to leave without explaining what it was. I had to stop her and ask questions. This wasn’t even a whole 5 mins for the exam and I was charged $99.
