How to Save Money at Boyd Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We moved to Texas in 2018, and thank the universe we moved near Boyd Animal Hospital, they have taken care of both of our senior dogs since we arrived, Violet is 13 and recently our sweet Henry lost his battle to Cancer and he missed his 17th Birthday by only 6 months, the care and compassion we had from the staff here when he moved on, was something you can't even put a dollar amount on. I am pretty sure they even charged us less than we should have been. Henry felt safe and loved in the arms of the workers here as he finished out his great life, and we would not have wanted it any other way. Thank you Boyd Animal Hospital, we love you. Thanks for taking care of our Boy.

We love our vet! They are always reasonable with pricing and, most importantly, you can tell they genuinely care about our pets. The staff is kind, knowledgeable, and treats our furry family members like their own. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a caring and affordable veterinary clinic!

Boyd Animal Hospital is the BEST! From the front desk staff ladies to the vet techs and doctors, they are friendly, caring, and treat you and your fur babies like family! I love each and every one of them for the personal care they provide to my dogs.

I’ve took my boxers there for 4 yrs now. Maggie, Mosby and Pepper love it. They treat my dogs like family. Best bunch of Aggies I’ve ever met. That’s a lot coming from a Longhorn fan. I appreciate everything they do. 1LT Trey S Martinez

Sasha Baxter

We had been on the waiting list for this clinic for quite some time because of its excellent reputation, so we were genuinely excited to finally establish care for our dog, Sasha. Unfortunately, we left before we ever met the veterinarian because of our experience with the vet tech. The main reason for our visit was to establish care with a vet we could trust because Sasha has had a very difficult case of diabetes that has remained unregulated despite over a year of dedicated care. From the moment we walked into the exam room, the interaction felt cold and off putting. The tech didn’t kindly greet us or make any effort to make Sasha feel comfortable. Sasha was clearly scared, yet instead of trying to comfort her or speak gently to her, the tech handled her impatiently. She wanted to know Sasha’s history. As I explained that her diabetes began after receiving a steroid injection last year, the tech stopped typing, turned toward me, and questioned it by saying, “Diabetes from a steroid shot??” I explained that Sasha developed symptoms shortly afterward and it wasn’t until then that our previous vet told us steroids can trigger diabetes in some dogs. Which was the case for Sasha. No other vet has questioned that because it’s common knowledge. Apparently not for this tech. She shook her head as though she didn’t believe me and continued typing. It was hurtful, but I gave the benefit of the doubt, and I continued explaining Sasha’s history, including that she became completely blind by October, underwent cataract surgery in November, and has still been difficult to regulate despite our consistent efforts. My mom then mentioned that we’re extremely vigilant about Sasha’s care bc we had another diabetic dog we loved for 16 yrs who recently passed away. Before my mom could finish speaking, the tech interrupted her, ignored what she had just said, looked at Sasha, and asked us, “So she’s blind right now?” I had literally just explained that Sasha had gone blind and undergone cataract surgery already. At that point it became obvious that she wasn’t listening and just had a bad attitude. She didn’t seem to care about us the second we walked in and it continued to show. She then asked whether someone else had owned Sasha before us “for her to be so unregulated,” even though I had already explained that we’ve had Sasha since she was a puppy and that her diabetes developed last year. After that, she began explaining that diabetic dogs need a strict schedule, can’t miss insulin doses, and must stay on the proper care plan. While that information is true, it felt incredibly condescending because I had just explained that our lives revolve around Sasha’s insulin schedule and that we’ve been managing her diabetes every single day for over a year. The severity of her case is not due to us being negligent. Which is obviously why we’re at the vet seeking help. Instead, it felt like she had already decided we were irresponsible or uneducated owners instead of listening to the detailed timeline we were sharing with her. When she left to get the doctor, my mom and I looked at each other in complete disbelief. We wanted to leave but we decided to wait for the doctor because we waited so long to come to this vet. However, the tech came back into the room, silently opened a drawer, grabbed something, glared at us, and walked right back out without saying a word. At this point, we made the decision to leave. We explained to the front desk we had a bad experience with the tech and no longer felt comfortable continuing the appointment. She apologized and we left before ever meeting the doctor. I understand that one employee doesn’t represent an entire clinic, and I cannot speak to the quality of the doctors because we never met one. However, first impressions matter. When you’re bringing in your very sick, medically complex fur baby, you hope to feel heard, respected, and supported. Instead, we left feeling dismissed, judged, and uncomfortable. After waiting so long to become patients here, it was incredibly disappointing.
