How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love this location and their staff. I have been in Knoxville for five years and moved here as an existing Banfield client. Their team’s expert care of my dog helped her to live for over two years with Cushings! They were also so wonderful with arranging her final days with me. I have another dog, so it’s not like we stopped visiting after that, and they continue to help me with my pets through every stage of life.

I will be cancelling my wellness plan after having had it for 2 years. I think originally there was some cost savings involved but it has become more than I find it worth. No one specifically at the morell location hardly ever answers the phone. Every time my cat has gone for his routine visits he gets sent back with some type of expensive “need” that really isn’t as serious as they make it out to be. I want to just send my cat for his yearly visits and know I’m not going to be scared into costly add ons. When he was just a kitten I was told he may have calici virus because his gums were inflamed in reality that was gingivitis and now I’m being told he may need a tooth extraction which was quoted at 1100$ and according to all of my other cat parent friends that is high on the spectrum for that service. When in reality who is to say if he even needs the extraction! I will be taking my cat to a regular vet from now on for peace of mind.

I took my two year old dachshund in for a spay. The team was very communicative before during and after her surgery. Very comforting to know they cared so much. Great team. Dottie healed excellently, tough to even see a scar. Excellent work! Thank you!❤️

They have wonderful insurance plans for all stages of a pet's life and they are very affordable. They always call me to set up appointments for the dogs so I don't have to remember when their exams or shots are due. They always call and check up on them the day after, as well. I can drop my pups off in the morning for their exam and shots and pick them up in the afternoon and I never have to wait. All the staff are very friendly and helpful and they truly love animals. The vets are knowledgeable and always able to answer my many questions. I highly recommend them! UPDATE: I still stand by this review. Dr. Dickson was so amazing when our chihuahua was diagnosed with cancer and we eventually had to put her down. We have 3 other dogs that have been going here since they were 6 weeks old. Two of them got into some Vitamin D, which can kill dogs, and the vet saw them immediately. She undoubtedly saved their lives. She even discounted the service because there were two of them. It cost a lot, but I can only imagine what it would cost at the emergency vet. All the vets I have seen are very knowledgeable and caring. I highly recommend this vet.

I have never ever been there where I had to wait less than 50 min to be seen, in fact I have waited up to 1.5 hours in the past. We like the staff but the way they schedule patients is awful. It’s overpriced if you weigh the entire experience.
