How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have had a good experience with this banfield. The other one in mount pleasant is beyond bad. This banfield has been great. We just discovered DR.Sweatman and she was amazing. We really trust her. Something we can’t say about any doctor at longpoint rd. Sweatman did our pups surgery and made sure we were well informed and also even took the time to help us get all our flea meds, something she went out of her way to help with. We are so happy we have a very we can finally trust after going through many others at banfield. The guy at the front desk was also so nice and informative. The manager is great too. This would be a 5 star review if it weren’t for the younger front desk lady being uniformed and rude on previous occasions.

Today we had to say goodbye to our 18 yo dog, the staff at the my pleasant west location has taken care of him for many years, but today Dr. Hunter and Trisha went above and beyond in their care and understanding. They took the time to explain everything not only to us but to our young children that were there to say goodbye. Niklaus crossed the rainbow bridge surrounded by love and care. Thank you Dr. Hunter and Trisha for your care and support.

Being a wellness member saved us $1,400 at a pet hospital because we called banfield and Quentin told us to come on in 1 hour before they closed for the day on a FRIDAY night. Couldn’t be more thankful! Quentin was so kind, attentive, patient & showed empathy. Thank you guys at Banfield! Our pup is already feeling bed with the fluids and medication y’all gave for his infection.

They were amazing! They squeezed my puppy in to be sure I didn’t have to pay extra for the puppy plan since I was a little over the time period for shots. And they treated him so well. We will be regulars ♥️

I will not be returning to Banfield after my experience this past Friday, 8/8. I have been going to this Banfield location since 2022. I was hesitant to take my dog here to begin with, but it was the best financial option for me at the time. As my dog is young and has been completely healthy, I assumed Banfield would be fine for shots and comprehensive exams. It is now clear that this assumption was wrong. For some background, my dog had a drop off appointment for a routine check up and shots this past Friday. They called me to let me know he was ready for pick up, and said he did a great job and that they love him (as they always do). Based on this conversation, I figured everything was normal with my dog’s health. Once I got there, I waited 20+ minutes to be checked out and then be seen by the vet who “wanted to speak with me”. She told me that my 5 pound and 3 year old asymptomatic dog’s ALKP (a liver enzyme) was 7 TIMES NORMAL. Dr. Sweatman had the worst bedside manner I have ever experienced. She told me the blood marker was high and did not give any follow up information. That was it. No information on next steps, what this could mean, etc. Obviously, i did not go to vet school so simply telling me that a marker is high in a 3 word sentence is not a sufficient amount of information. The only information I was given was based on the questions I was asking and it was BASIC information- I shouldn’t have even had to ask. It was absurd. Finally, after essentially begging for more details, she ended up saying he needs to come back next week for more blood work and an ultrasound that would cost $150+ dollars at minimum. She didn’t even provide me with a copy of the blood results, and they were not available to me on the app. I had to call to ask for the results, and Danielle said they would be sent immediately. I got a call 4 hours later, after worrying nonstop about my dog who was otherwise completely healthy, googling every possibility because basically no information was provided to me. The call was from Dr. hunter who said the NEW VET TECHS RAN HIS BLOODWORK WRONG AND THAT IT WAS IN NORMAL RANGE. She said they were going to “go through the processes with the new techs to make sure this never happens again”. I was stressed about this for hours, thinking about alternative vets I could take him to and trying to decipher the lack of information I was provided with. Not to mention, I had a follow up appointment for Tuesday where i would have potentially spent hundreds of dollars, and put my dog through the stress of follow up tests. I am certain that they would have NEVER re-ran the blood if I haven’t asked for the results. They should have re-ran it immediately after seeing a result that high in a dog that has no symptoms and has never had health issues. It shouldn’t have ever come to this! This was horrible patient treatment. It seems clear that because they treat animals, and not humans, they believe they can slack on the standard of care. I will not be returning to Banfield EVER. Also I asked if I could get out of my plan, and Danielle told me I couldn’t because it’s a year contract and I will have to back pay. I literally pay month to month, so that’s also ridiculous. Especially after this experience of negligence and ignorance.
