How to Save Money at Charleston Harbor Veterinarians

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

5 stars doesn’t begin to do CHV justice. Their team is not only incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, but genuinely comforting and accommodating. You and your pet feel like part of their family from the moment you walk in. As many pet parents are, I'm constantly worried about every little thing with my Cane Corso Lemmy. After a negative experience at an emergency vet, he developed vet-related anxiety but the CHV team has been nothing but patient, understanding, and loving with him. They’ve even let my very large dog climb into their laps just to help him feel safe. That level of compassion is rare, and it means more than I can say. They never rush us, and the time they’ve devoted to answering my many questions has not gone unnoticed. Special shoutout to Dr. Kahuda! Lemmy absolutely adores everyone at CHV. I couldn’t recommend them more.

Amazing vet! Could not recommend more. I've been seeing Dr Coco for a few years now for my cats, and she is excellent--really cares, wants to get to the bottom of what's going on, listens to your thoughts and concerns and answers all your questions. I've had some cats with some pretty tricky medical issues. When there's different options for treatment, we talk about the pros and cons of each, though I often ultimately decide by asking "what would you do if it were your cat?", to which she gives her honest opinion, and I've never regretted taking that route. All the techs are great too--very gentle and patient and friendly. I always feel very welcome here. The exam rooms are comfortable, clean but not "sterile" feeling--they each have a couch upholstered with some kind of water/stain resistant material, and in most, the exam table folds down from the wall, disguised as a door. There's one "cat room" that has a cat tower in it, that my cats love to go hide in, though we're more often in a different room just due to availability. There's a little fridge stocked with sparkling waters in the waiting area, and a keurig. Whenever the cats need labs done, the results are always communicated in a very timely manner (I had an issue with this at my previous vet, All Creatures--I always eventually had to contact them to ask!) The office also always texts the next day to check in how your pet is doing, which I appreciate.

Dr. Caroline Randinelli and her team were extremely polite and very knowledgeable. They answered all questions and gave me information about my cats’ issues that I had not been given before. If you have to take your babies to the doctor, this is where you need to go!

Charleston Harbor Veterinarians has been nothing short of phenomenal. They saw my boy Jafar for urinary issues, and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I absolutely love Dr. Coco, and the veterinary assistant (I’m so sorry I didn’t catch your name!) was incredible as well. They were kind, loving, understanding, and truly personable. They listened to every concern I had — and I had plenty — with so much patience and compassion. Jafar did amazing in their care and definitely enjoyed all the attention he got. I’m so grateful for the way they treated both of us. Highly recommend!

My dog has followed up with the team here at CHV since we moved in July. She has a history of aggressive mast cell and the team has done a great job monitoring her with abdominal US and check ups. The prices here are very reasonable and the staff are considerate of your circumstances. I'm surgical resident at MUSC so my hours make it tough and my income is low, they worked with me even seeing me on the Dr's lunch break to care for Olive after she had an episode of anaphylactic shock. I was unable to afford a liver protectant medication after a $4000 ICU bill (not at CHV, due to her anaphylactic shock) so they gave us a donated package of the liver protectant medication to ensure Olive was covered. They are very skilled, considerate, and knowledgeable vets. They even allowed me to watch Olive receive her abdominal ultrasound and the radiologist talked me through what she saw. I cannot recommend them enough, Olive loves them and I'm beyond grateful for their kindness and care for her.
