How to Save Money at Central Pennsylvania Veterinary Emergency Treatment Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The staff and doctor were nice and friendly, I just don’t like their system and how they take your pet away from you and keep coming back to you to talk to you and make decisions while your pet is kept away and you don’t see him! My dog Pepper was diagnosed with cancer and it wasn’t anything they could do for him and we wanted to spend the last day with him at home so after we got him back and while we were driving home he passed in my arm and I only had 5 minutes with him after I find out he is in end of his life😞 if they had let us stay with him when we went in the hospital I would of be with him to comfort him in his last hours of his life! This is not good for the pet and owner to be separated in a stressful time of emergency when you need your loved ones around you the most.

You never want to have to go to an emergency vet and I was so scared to take my baby to strangers but I didn't have a choice my local vet recommended them and they accepted us despite being busy. From the moment we got there I knew it was the right choice we were sitting in the waiting room maybe 5 minutes and they were apologizing about the delay, probably because people think an emergency room you just walk right in and they take you but that's not how it works. Everything was very thoroughly explained and everyday was so extremely kind and patient. Every single person you could tell liked their job and liked helping animals and genuinely cared about your pet and you as the pet parent. Our dog had to undergo surgery and was there for about 48 hours and she is doing amazing so far. I'm so grateful for this establishment. Dr. Coleman and Dr. Loar took such amazing care of Bella! I wish I could name all the vet techs that took care of her as I know they deserve the recognition too!

I had a really great experience at CPVets! My cat was having stomach issues/lethargy and I took her to CPVets. They were upfront about the fees over the phone. Then, soon after arriving, I spoke to the vet about the best plan of action for my cat and the vet checked with me about every procedure before completing it. All three vets I saw there were very transparent about the price and risks of certain treatment paths and I felt like they gave excellent and rational advice. They were kind throughout my visit and were very patient with my rambunctious cat. My cat has now recovered from her stomach problem and is back to her rambunctious behavior. I would highly recommend CPVets!!

Very nice staff. The vet is wonderful and we just happened to get there at a good time because we didn't wait but 2 hours from start to finish. It was way cheaper than what we were expecting too. Someone told me they were cheaper than Metzger and did great care. I definitely can agree with the great care. I've never taken a cat to metzgers so I can't verify that. But I HIGHLY recommend them!

Got home from vacation at 3AM to find something very wrong with my cat’s chin. We went to CP vets. The intake paperwork was easily completed online. Yes, you pay the exam fee upfront when you first get there. My cat made an absolutely disgusting mess in her carrier upon arrival. The staff at CP Vets were all very understanding and took care of it all. Everyone from the receptionist, tech, and vet were all very friendly and helpful. Every thing was explained thoroughly, with the costs up front, options, recommendations, and aftercare. All questions were answered. I must’ve went on a really good day because there was little to no wait at all. Everything was extremely clean and there’s a nice coffee station in the lobby area. CP Vets was a great experience (despite the unfortunate circumstances that led us there) and I am so thankful they were there during my cat’s time of need. I felt like the prices were reasonable, considering they are staffing an emergency clinic 24/7 to be there anytime your pet(s) need them. It is a business and they need to be able to pay their bills and their 24/7 staff. Running a business in this economy and with how people are these days? I would expect payment upfront as well.
