How to Save Money at Animal Hospital of Mt. Pocono

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Velese has provided quality care to my rescue dog which was in need of extensive dental care. He listens to my concerns and follows through with excellent recommendations and treatment. The entire staff is courteous, friendly and presents a professional manner.

My rat had a medical emergency: my regular vet was out of town and all emergency vets nearby were quoting me anywhere from $500-$1000 for her care. I called everywhere and nobody was willing to take her, until by a whim we called Animal Hospital of Mount Pocono. They not only took exotics, but they were able to squeeze in my girl for a next day appointment. Everyone was extremely friendly and treated my rat with care. They got her the antibiotics she needed and she’s gone from being lethargic and sickly to eating, drinking, and socializing again. I’m so thankful they were able to take her in on such short notice, especially since we were new patients. For her visit, antibiotics, additional meds, and lab tests, it came to $220. If you’re a rat owner, you know how expensive their care can be. I found this to be extremely reasonable, especially for such short notice. I’m so grateful they took great care of my baby. I’ll be bringing my other rats here in the future.

Please be careful. My pets initial appt was due to blood in urine. Which was handled appropriately. After getting labs back Dr suggested a more thorough study which I could not afford. As my dog is older it was decided to give a full course of antibiotic treatment. This treatment was not successful and other symptoms which presented called to make an appointment to end suffering of pet. No appointment was available and Dr I initially saw was not there So they wanted to charge another assessment fee on top of the fee to end the suffering of my pet as the dr there did mot see me I told them my dog was already assessed and treatment didn’t work and at this time would like to end his pain and suffering. They said they had no appointments but if I wanted to come in for an emergent visit they would charge me 249 to bring dog. I was so offended by there lack of compassion and extortion of money for one’s animal end of suffering. Really you don’t have the time for 88. But can find it for 249. Wow. Where is your integrity and compassion

I can’t say enough how pleased I have been with the folks at the Animal Hospital of Mt Pocono. They have taken superb care of my pup, Alfie, who I brought home from a rescue shelter about a year ago. Also, about 1.5 years ago, they helped nurse my sick rabbit, Downy, back to health from a scary illness, and he is still thriving and happy to this day. It wasn’t easy finding a vet who would care for my “exotic” pet rabbit, either. Further, the entire staff - Dr. Valese, Joshua, Kelly, and their vet techs - are all just so friendly, accommodating, helpful, and genuinely caring toward all the animals. It’s so reassuring to find such a warm, nurturing, and capable team!
