How to Save Money at VCA Holly Farms Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My dogs love going here, a little too much 😒 they are absolutely in love with all the staff! I have been going to VCA Holly Farms for at least 18 years, since before the new building, since before they were VCA! They are by far the most compassionate and helpful vets / techs / staff I have ever encountered. I would not trust my dogs with anyone else. They listen to your concerns and take the time to go over options with you. Dr. Sieben clearly loves what she does and has a depth of knowledge you will want on your side. Dr. Stark is wonderful too. Every single tech I’ve ever interacted with is lovely, and the front staff are even awesome.

SO GLAD I DIDN'T PUT DOWN A HEALTHY CAT. Please if I were you I would not go to this vets office and I certainly will not go back nor recommend them ever. I went here with my cat who was dragging his legs and wanted to get him in quickly and the emergency vets are having issues staying open and with staff so I was able to get him in here where my sister had gone. When the vet came in she said my cat was very sick and really needed to be put down. He is a stray I been caring for I side for 6 years so I told her I wasn't going to put him down right now. She said it can become costly for tests and treatment so she would work up amount for him to get x-rays and blood work. She came back with $950.00 and I explained to her I was just laid off waiting on unemployment i also just had my dog and another cat to the vet along with 2 furnaces out and a water heater so was there any way we could do either blood work today and x-rays in a week or vice versa and she said NO. I was like what do you mean no you can't split them up? She said no this way we get the whole picture at once. I said I understand that but I can do it all but it will have to be in a week from now and again adamantly she said NO i said anyway we can cut down on some of the lab work or x-ray views and again NO but she can give him steroids and a pain shot and antibiotic shot and send him home for $308.00 is what happened. The next week I was able to get into my vets who did x-rays and checked for leukemia that came back fine except hip dysplasia and being they were half the price of this vet they did his blood work and it was fine. So my vet gave him a shot for arthritis and we are working with him to walk I think he is afraid of the pain. So I'm really glad I didn't put him down at Holly Farms. A day or so later they called to see how things were and I explained they don't need to call back because I definitely won't use them again and I explained to the girl who called I definitely wouldn't put a new patient with this vet because you may lose a lot of patients. She also informed me I me if I wanted to make an appointment for just blood work she could do that and I told her no thanks you missed that chance yesterday when she wouldnt do that. So please find another vet because she wanted to put down a cat that only had hip dysplasia. I really want believe the way they did and treated me and neither can people I speak to. I have to ever heard of vet to do that. I have money in a house I'm flipping, just paid $330.00 for my dog, $532.00 for my cat $980.00 for furnaces and now only $308.00 here so far for my cat. But I'm glad I got everything done and he's healthy except his hip dysplasia. Best of luck to you all.

We have had our pets taken care of by this superior veterinary clinic/hospital for years. We recently got a puppy and took her to VCA today. The entire staff is second to none. The doctor(s) and technicians understand patient care to the upmost. Thank you VCA!

I just started taking my cat to VCA. They are really great with their patience, very knowledgeable and care about the well being of animals. I felt that my cat was well taken care of however I wasn’t okay with finding out about the pricing being so much just for a stool sample to be sent out. Was told it would $60 and I go to find out $80 was taken without my knowledge and that I had to call them about it. (Was over the app) I know they offer a program but I’m not gonna spend on a program monthly when I don’t take my cat to the vet as often as most people as he doesn’t really need to see the vet 24/7. I do like the staff and they’re great but it’s just pricey. Ask questions before paying if you have to so you’re not going on the bank or the app and finding out more was taken out without your consent.

Long review, TW: Pet Death “Grief is perhaps the last and final translation of love. This is the last act of loving someone. And you realize that it will never end.” - Ocean Vuong I can’t thank VCA enough for what they did for me and my family. We took our cat to another vet, far from home, initially, because they accepted our godawful pet insurance. The news was bad. Very bad. We took him home for one last day of all the love and scritches, and all the treats he wanted. We cried a lot. We called VCA the next day, and told them our situation. They managed to get us in same day. We had to pay for another exam (good, I don’t want to be able to pay money to kill a healthy cat), and they confirmed our initial vet’s findings. It was time to let our precious boy go. The grace and kindness they showed us…incredible. I’m not exaggerating when I say the entire care team here treated me and my cat better than I could have imagined. I had been through my mother’s loss already at OSU’s teaching hospital, and I can’t stress enough: VCA treated me better about my cat’s passing than OSU treated me about my mother’s. They let us stay with him. They let us sing little songs and read poems to him as he left us. When we weren’t ready to go right away, they let us have another few minutes with his body. And, as we waited outside on the curb for our Uber home, we saw them carry him over to wherever his body would be kept until being transferred to the crematory. And here’s the thing: they carried him with such love. He was gone. And they had no reason to believe we’d still be watching. And [idk the vet or vet techs name] still carried him with such love and care, close to their chest. My memories here are terrible and painful, and I’ll still recommend VCA on Bancroft until I’m blue in the face. They were even understanding and kind when we struggled to get a ride to pick up his ashes. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
