How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Was not fully explained the puppy plan. My wife and I were told no more charges since we finished all his shots and neuter. But I was just told today i got 6 more months on 86 dollars a month. If I'd known that I'd have found a different vet. In total I'll have paid 1,032. They kept telling my wife and I this plan was cheaper in the long run. Not that I'd be splitting the money over 12 months. Also the plan doesn't cover crap if the dog gets sick. My puppy had a tummy ache that costed me over 500 dollars. I regret not looking the company up before I went there. So yeah go there if you enjoy being lied to and fraud.

I have been overcharged for the last time. I am switching vets TODAY and support a local vet who is consistent and truthful with pricing. A few days before this last appointment, I called to confirm what the price would be for the services that my dog needed. However, when I got to check-in, the quoted price that I was given over the phone went up over $30!! This is NOT the first time Banfield has pulled this, and I’m just over it. My money will go to support a local veterinarian and not to a greedy corporation who habitually bait and switches the pricing.

Enter this place at your own risk. You aren’t allowed to stay with you pet. I wouldn’t let a child go into a Drs office without me. So why should I leave my very nervous and shaky dog alone with strangers? My husband made an appt to get our Yorkies shots and teeth checked . He went back after waiting hours. They said to come back in 3 weeks for the shots because our contract needed renewed anyway. My husband said , Why did you mention his teeth and shots on the phone ? Our Yorkie was previously abused and to be punished they told him to go to his cage . He would go and shut the door himself . I don’t even own a cage. He hyperventilates if left alone and is so timid of everything . He was caged for hours at Banfield. He was always shaking so bad when we picked him up. She then told my husband to bring him back for shots in three weeks and sign new contract. My husband canceled and will be calling the bank . It was at the end of our contract also. This is my first dog ever and I would like someone caring to take care of him .

They good for most part, I just hate you pay monthly for pet plans but you still have to pay for meds if your pet is sick. Your dog doesn't go to the vet every month yet you pay the money every month and still get charged for medicine if they need it. The montly plan for one maybe two times your pet gets sick definitely outweigh the cost..I plan to end plan with them and search around for better options. Then say open when you call but automative voice says closed

I had to put my cat down and they were wonderful there. I'm putting an update to this. So it's been a good while sense this happened and it still warms my heart at how they treated me and my cat. They were compassionate and answered all of my questions. I never felt rushed while saying goodbye they tried to make it as painless as possible for me. I will always be grateful to them for that. Every single person that day the lady at the desk the vet techs and the vet were just unbelievably kinds and I hope they all see this so they know they made that day a little more barrable. Thank you
