How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Absolutely wonderful place. You can feel it when you walk in the door. They couldn't have been better with me and my family during such a difficult time. Staff was so sweet and kind. They gave us all the time we needed with our cat before he was put down due to his age and health issues. Bea was AMAZING. I love her. Dr. Bullock was so nice and caring. Betsy was wonderful as well, made sure we were ok and brought us water and even gave me a hug when I picked up his ashes. All the staff was nice! They also mailed a card to my house the staff wrote in with his paw print which was so nice. I will 100% be bringing my other cats here. Highly recommend.

Biko has been a Banfield Pet Baby since we brought him home when her was 12 weeks old. The Vets and intake staff are awesome and very diligent about the care given to each fur baby that comes through the door. I love that we can go to any Banfield hospital. The preventive care plans are so reasonable as well as the hotline for emergency advice.

Did a wonderful job with my Maltese spaying and hernia repair. The surgeon was very informative and did a very clean and nice job.

I have never written a google review before but this warrants one. We were looking for a new vet and we tried this vet. The first visit was okay except for the price for a pedicure which was $30 and they just cut her nails. They also tried to get us for everything under the sun which is the norm at any vet we go to. We initially went in because our dog got bit by a tick and we were worried about Lyme disease. They told us they will test her but she came up negative because it was too soon understandably. We called back this morning and because our dog was showing signs of weakness in her legs which is the main symptom of Lyme disease we asked to get her tested with a technician which, mind you, she had an appointment for next Wednesday to do this! They told us NO that she had to come in for a full panel and check up which when we asked the cost was over $900. They work off of your love for your pet and will exploit you for money. We argued and they would not see our dog which forced us to go somewhere else. We therefore went to the Farmingdale Dog and Cat Clinic up the road and they took her in gave her an exam and tested her for Lyme (exactly what we wanted). She came back positive of course and was given antibiotics for less than $200. I called Banfield back after we got the result and asked to speak to a manager but instead of doing that they put the same person I spoke earlier with on the phone who was not professional and kept justifying a $900 exam. I honestly would not recommend this place to anyone. They do not truly care about your animals and want to take your money! It is so sad! Go to the Farmingdale Dog and Cat Clinic which is up the road! To make matters worse its National Pet day today April 11th, 2025!!
