How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Staff was 10 minutes late to our 8A appt & then wanted to check someone else in before us because she had a walker ... she also had an appt 30 minutes after us. There was no emergency with that customer's dog, so not sure what the front desk's logic was to delay our visit even more. There was, however, another frantic customer concerned about her puppy's welfare & THAT, too, took precedence over our appt as we sat in a room for 20 minutes just to talk to the vet regarding a follow-up & meds. Our tech, Erin, was as kind as possible, even the vet was very pleasant, but the lack of professionalism in timeliness & procedure left a lot to be desired. We didn't leave there until 9A for a simple follow-up. I understand that things happen, but fun fact, things can be prevented as well. If you book an 8A appt, you should have staff there prior to ensure timely intake. If other customers show up earlier than their appt, at no time should they get consideration over another customer. Emergencies are emergencies, but you should still communicate to your customers that they have not been forgotten. Happily, there are other Petco's we can go to, so this one is no longer a choice for us.

October 7, 2025 we spoke with Amy at Vetco in Las Vegas and she made room for our 13 year old dog, Axl to see the Vet due to an eye issue. She was very caring and had wonderful customer service skills. We were from out of town, and she could have easily stated there were no appointments left, but she took the time to help us. Thank you Amy!

Misinformation provided by phone. I called them Saturday to see if they had the canine influenza vaccine and how much it would cost to get my dog her 2nd shot. They told me sixty some dollars. I asked if that was the total, she said there maybe a hazardous waste disposal fee but that is it. I've seen plenty of disposal fees and they tend to be $5-10. I showed up a few minutes early for our appointment. She then advised me it would be like $150 with an exam. I explained that I cannot afford that and that on Saturday--I was told a different amount. She wanted to shift the blame to me, but I honestly have no idea how I could have been more clear when I asked for a total price on the phone. She explained that if she doesn't perform the 2nd shot, my dog isn't vaccinated. Well, that's only half true. I can goto a Vetco Vaccination Clinic and have the same shot for ~$50. We always get our shots at the Vaccination Clinic, they didn't have an available appointment that fit my schedule this time. I knew the hospital would charge more, and when I was told $68 plus disposal fee, it sounded like a total amount, especially after my exact question was, "is that the total?". We can surely wait and have it done next week for a hundred dollars less at a clinic. I won't be back to this Petco location for any of my future needs.

Staff took incredible care of our Bella girl. Gave us several options to better her health. Our dog was so anxious upon arriving but Dr. Cometa and her vet staff were so patient, thorough and friendly. The receptionist greeted us with a smile and we immediately felt at home! Thank you guys for all you do and taking care of our fur babies!🩷🐶

The staff is friendly and helpful. Dr Cometa & the vet assistants are great. They take thorough notes, listen to everything and never seem to be in a rush. They take all the time you need to address all of your concerns and questions. Highly Recommend them. Carlos B. Dog is my son and a superstar so his care is the most important thing in the world. Obviously.
