How to Save Money at Tropicana Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had an amazing experience during a very stressful situation. Our little boy Noctis got into some food he shouldn’t have and ingested something toxic to dogs. Of course like most emergencies it happened right when most vets were closed or closing, and being new to the area I didn’t know who to call. I tried calling an urgent care near me and they advised me they would probably send me out to Animal Emergency after making him puke since they were closing soon. I called Animal Emergency thinking I would just go straight to them instead and they told me it would most likely be 3+ hours of waiting before they’d see him and that I was required to call Poison Control first to start a case (which has its own fee). I was worried the long wait would be dangerous so as a last try I called Tropicana and told them my situation and if they had a long wait time. They told me they had many cases that night, but reassured me my situation was urgent and they would see Noctis right away. Sure enough, as soon as I entered their facility they took him back immediately while I filled out paperwork which I was so appreciative of. They didn’t force me to start a Poison Control case since they were able to care for him right away, and while they offered to monitor him overnight I was reassured that it would be for the benefit of observation and not made to feel like a bad owner for deciding to observe him at home (he’s an anxious guy and having worked at a vet we felt comfortable keeping an eye on him). Best of all, their price was lower than Animal Emergency’s and the Urgent Care’s quote!! For a similar event when I lived in Reno I was charged $1000+. I left paying around $240 for the exam, procedure, medication, and fluids. That was basically the cost for just the procedure at the other locations I called! Thank you so much for taking care of Noctis! Will definitely return (hopefully not anytime soon). Just know they don’t accept CareCredit (our original plan) or Discover (our usual bank)— that was the only thing that caught us off guard, but otherwise great staff and experience.

They treated my cat, luna, so well after she swallowed a nerf dart. The doctor was quick and friendly. They always kept us in the loop. I love how they allow visitation while my cat hax to stay there for a few days. Pricing was affordable and upfront.

Highlights: friendly and compassionate staff, reasonable prices, open 24/7, clean 1. Kayla, Yumi and the third person in the front desk are so friendly and make the process of checking in, and checking out easy! 2. Our veterinarian was very knowledgeable I did a lot of research online before we came in and our cat was vomiting pink (so I knew it was blood) however our Vet didn’t know I knew and I just appreciate how she addressed it in a compassionate manner “I don’t want to scare you but pink means she’s got a little blood in her vomit” something along the lines 3. We are anxious pet owners, Lila went above and beyond to help us feel comfortable and answered all our questions about meds, and at home care. You could tell she loves our pets and I just wanted to cry because she was so kind during our stressful time. Now that I wrote about what makes this place so awesome I’ll give a little bit of background info. We found our babies at a yard, not knowing a single thing about cats, we first came to Tropicana Animal Hospital because we needed KMR milk for these newborns at 2am (babies did not eat for hours) and they helped us, walked us through the process of how to feed them and were so kind. Why Tropicana Animal Hospital isn’t our primary veterinarian? I’m highly considering making them our primary veterinarian, however commute is long to them, but I think it’s so worth it. And I might be making a regular (non er appointment soon) they care and it shows!

Best Vet hospital ever! They totally awesome 💯.... Best veterinary care the staff and Drs are so sweet, kind and understanding... I totally recommend you take your pet there. They do have separate sides for dogs and cats, so my cat has less stress 😬. My boy Jaguar totally agreed! He's doing great! 💯😃 He got neutered and his shots.

It's hard to write this review... But my pibble was having a hard time breathing, drooling more than normal, and denied food.... I took her to VCA Nellis and without hesitation they sent me to tropicanna VCA....we had exrays and blood work done.... my baby had peripheral effusion, her heart was surrounded by fluids caused by cancer... Anyways....thats irrelevant to the review... They gave us great service and theyre cremation offers are great. I have a nice photo box, with her inside, and a clay paw print, and little 3"×4" framed canvas paw print of my baby... A certificate of her death and cremation date.... They REALLY made me feel that she was special and not just a ticket number in line. Tropicanna VCA. Thank YOU for being at the base of my furbabies rainbow bridge. 80lb pitbull...and they loved on her.... The techs and vet cried with us.... I wish i remembered their names.... But the ENTIRE staff was so.... Compassionate. Thank you VCA.
