How to Save Money at Manahawkin Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I moved here 4 and a half years ago with my 10 rescue dogs, and after going to several veterinarians in the area, I have found Dr. Bodman to be the best. He is extremely knowledgeable and caring. You may have to wait a while in the waiting room, but it's only because he takes his time listening and explaining everything to his furry patient parents. He truly is concerned over the well-being of his patients, and without breaking the bank. Dr. Bodman is a wonderful human being and doctor, I highly recommend him.

Dr. Bodman is a very knowledgeable, kind, caring, compassionate vet. I've been taking my cats to him for 20+ years for all of their needs, from nail clippings to eye surgery, he has been wonderful! Sometimes there's a bit of a wait to be seen even with an appointment but, it's well worth it. He takes the time to explain everything & answer all questions, he's very thorough. We miss his Forked River location but are willing to drive to Manahawkin or even to the Little Egg Harbor office if needed. I highly recommend him.

I don't normally write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience. I'm down on the island for the summer months and needed a somewhat emergent appt (to be seen that day) for my pup. I called another local vet and was greeted not so friendly by their receptionist and was told that they aren't an emergency vet. I wasn't calling saying it was an emergency but rather that I wasn't a current customer from out-of-town that was looking for an appointment to bring my pup in that day. I then contacted Manahawkin Vet and was offered an appointment time even though we weren't regular patients there. While waiting, a woman came in with her kitty and had same issue where she needed to be seen that day. She wasn't a current patient at Manahawkin Vet but was with the other vet that I called earlier that morning. They told her the same thing which I found odd since that was her normal vet. The receptionist was a bit snippy with the lady too. Anyhow, we met w Dr. Bodman and I couldn't be more pleased. He took the time to explain in detail my pup's issue, medications, pharmacology of the previous and current medications, etc. He was patient, informative, and professional. The service was reasonably priced IMO. If I hadnt been able to get an appointment, I wouldve most definitely had to go to an emergency vet which is quite expensive. Thank you Dr. Bodman and staff for seeing us that day. I will be passing the referral on to others on the island. Definitely a 10/10. Lita 🏝🐕thanks you too 😊

Feels like they really care. I took my 8 puppy boxers to get their tails clips and the doc explained everything and did a great job. Been taking my dogs their ever since. 👍🏻 great vet.

Dr. Bodman is really incredible and someone who I can trust my pet with. While you may be here for a long time, it is absolutely worth the wait because of the care he will give your pet. The office staff and techs are also incredibly nice.
