How to Save Money at Mizzou Small Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. A and her student assistant were compassionate and communicative. They kept me updated every step of the way and did everything they could to help save my kitty - but at the same time, they didn't push any unnecessary procedures. Dr. A was straightforward with me about my cat's status, but delivered bad news gently and professionally. I'm so glad Henry was in their care during his final hours. Dr. A even took the time to personally call me the next day to tell me about some additional bloodwork findings (which she didn't have to do), and it gave me peace of mind to know that there's nothing else we could have done.

I took my dog in as an emergency on a Sunday early afternoon. He ended up needing emergency surgery. Dr. Toporis was the physician who helped us. He was amazing. He was so great at explaining everything in detail and helping me understand every aspect of what was going on. He kept me updated every time there was an update. He was also very patient and reassuring with all of my questions - I ask a lot. I stayed until the surgery was over around 11pm. The surgeon came out and talked with me, and she was so sweet and friendly as well. She and her assistant were very professional, but it felt more like a friend's conversation. Every staff member was so kind during our whole experience there! My dog had to stay in the ICU for 2 days afterward. They kept me informed of everything going on with my pup - they called me in the mornings to let me know how he did overnight, and they let me come see him in the afternoons. I am so impressed with everyone's kindness and the comforting demeanor of this office. The lobby isn't the most updated lobby I've been in, so it made me a little skeptical in the beginning, but learning that they focus on equipment, supplies, and the quality of the back made me so much more comfortable. The staff of this hospital made this traumatic experience more enjoyable to remember. Also, they have phone chargers in the lobby!!!

If you want answers or even results, don't go here. I was told by the end of the week I'd have pathology on his spleen and the next week his stones. We are now 2 weeks later with no answers. I've called several times asking to speak to the Doctor my dog had for the results and still no call back. They scheduled me an appointment with them without me knowing after discussing I'd use my primary for follow up then had the nerve to send an email saying I'd be charged a fee if I don't show for the follow up with them? Make it make sense. If they would've done that to my grandma she would have never seen the email and been charged over their negligence. I just want the results so I can be done with this place. They have POOR communication within. Different people kept giving me different answers. And none were consistent. On top of that when leaving they brought me a muzzle because "they thought it was mine". They forgot a whole bottle of pills on top each bottle missing 1-7 pills each from them.

We were referred here from out of state by my service dogs specialist. They were very good with her, very thorough and continue to follow up on her progress. Excellent facility.
