How to Save Money at Emergency Veterinary Care Centers

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We had our first emergency pet visit with our five month old puppy! She was lethargic, wobbling & vomiting and we were extremely concerned for her well-being and health. I called EVCC & someone answered my call immediately. The reception was extremely helpful and empathetic, she directed me to the website where I was able utilize their website to register and get my place in line at 2 o’clock in the morning. From the initial phone call, to our intake at the office staff, to our wonderful vet tech, to Dr. McLemore we received empathetic , and compassionate care for our puppy. Thank you EVCC staff and Dr. McLemore for taking care of our puppy, but more importantly, taken care of our concerns for our puppy!!

cannot say enough good things about Emergency Vet Care Center! The staff was incredibly friendly, compassionate, and helpful from the moment we contacted them. They got us in right away, and it was such a relief to have someone take our concerns seriously and genuinely care about our pet’s health and well-being. They were kind, attentive, and truly wanted to help. When your pet is hurting or you’re worried about their health, the last thing you need is to feel dismissed or like nobody cares. This team made us feel heard and did everything they could to help. The difference in their compassion and willingness to help meant so much to us. I highly recommend Emergency Vet Care Center to anyone who needs emergency veterinary care. They treated us with kindness, got us in quickly, and helped us tremendously. You can tell they genuinely care about the animals they treat. Thank you to the entire team for being so wonderful when we needed help! ❤️🐾

I went their on June 14th with my dog Forrest for a severe bladder infection. The that I had that night was a woman and the Vet assistance name was Diamond. They were both excellent as as well as Everyone else in the building so kind and polite. They explained everything thoroughly and they treated my dog very well. However, On Saturday, June 20 I had to take my other dog Dozer for a severe ear infection. Rhis experience was not at all like the first. I had a young male dr and a male vet assistant. I was not as comfortable with these two as I were the first two and they didn’t really seem to be very confident in their jobs. They Put my dog under to clean his ears, thoroughly and packet them with medicine. They brought Him back into the room with us, and I cannot believe his condition!! He Couldn’t even walk he was laying on the floor. His tongue was all the way out of his mouth. He couldn’t respond to me, and he was acting like he was having Seizure like symptoms. He also Was panting so hard and fast I thought he was going to bloat. They did not seem very concerned. I brought this up several times that this isn’t my dog. When went to take him to the car, he could barely walk. We had to lift him in the car. He was still breathing frantically. I told my husband, I think they overdosed him when they put him under cause I have had another dog that this happened to you in the symptoms are the same. I was so very angry. Here we are 2 1/2 weeks later and my dog has never gone back to normal since he visited there. He acts confused and like he has an extreme discomfort. Besides overdose him, I also think they either hurt his back or neck when they put him under probably putting him on the table. He is a basset and you have to be very careful with their backs. He is going to see his reg vet next week to try and see what can be done for him. ALSO, they sent a sample from his ear to determine exactly what it is and what meds he should be on. I paid all most $300 for this test. I called to get results and the vet said it showed nothing. He said that usually happens if the pet was being treated beforehand. I told them several times that he had been treated with eardrops and an antibiotic before this, but they still went ahead and tested anyway, knowing that this test would come back negative? I asked why was he tested then? I received no answer. So If I ever have to go back again, and the female doctor is not there, I will take my pet somewhere else. Oh and my total bill was all most $1200. I have absolutely no complaints about desk staff. They were wonderful.

I was very happy with the care and communication I received after a night with one of the 10-week-old feral kittens I'm fostering. Little Misha had a breath rate of >breaths per minute with a constriction on the exhale, had been lethargic for the last half of the day, and was shivering. His breathing had slowed a little by the time we arrived at EVCC, but his temperature was 105.6 degrees. I understand that triaging is necessary for emergency care and that our case with Misha was relatively low risk/urgency by the time we arrived, especially compared to the other cases that had come in while we were there. Emergency visits are not necessarily quick, so I was understanding with the wait. Communication is the important thing in these situations, and the team was excellent in giving us rough timelinesso our expectations were managed. The staff was extremely empathetic and apologized for the wait, but I was fine with it and had no issues. I appreciate the care they showed, and the knowledge from the vet tech and veterinarian were helpful and they listened to the care history I provided on Misha. I am very happy with this visit, and while I hope to not have to come to an emergency vet again, I would gladly go back.
