How to Save Money at Mosel Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I really wanted to love this vet office. I’ve used them as a local backup since my preferred vet is out of town, but my recent experience felt wrong and honestly came across as a cash grab. I brought my cat in after an emergency night in the ER. The vet told me there wasn’t much he could do and recommended I see a specialist. Fair enough, but then he pushed an overpriced blood test, saying the specialist would need it anyway. I knew the pricing seemed high compared to other clinics, so I declined and explained that I wanted to confirm with the specialist first. I was already under financial and emotional strain, but would pay for what was necessary only and I wanted to make smart choices. Instead of offering to call and coordinate (as every other vet I’ve worked with has done), he told me to call myself and ended the appointment. That should have been red flag #1. The appointment felt like a waste of both time and money, and I immediately regretted not driving to my primary vet instead. However since I already started this process with them, I pushed along since time was of an essence. When I called the specialist, they were surprised I was the one reaching out and clarified which tests they actually needed. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t the same test Mosel had pushed. They wanted far less, which made me feel like Mosel was trying to tack on unnecessary costs. Now to less than 12 hours later, I called Mosel back to see if I could come in for a simple blood draw with a tech. The front desk refused unless I booked and paid for another full appointment, even though nothing had changed since my visit earlier that same day. They wanted me to spend another $75 just to get to the same point. I’ve never had a vet refuse a tech-only blood draw under these circumstances, and it felt like a blatant money grab and a huge waste of if the vets time for an appointment and care I already paid for. Frustrated, I went to VCA instead. At that point I had lost all trust in Mosel. I ended up paying about the same as Mosel had quoted me, which says a lot about how inflated their testing prices are, but the care at VCA was on a completely different level. Their team kept in constant contact with the neurologist, made sure all documentation was ready without me having to chase it down, and truly supported me before I rushed my cat across state the next day. The difference in quality and compassion spoke volumes. I will not be returning to Mosel.

The staff have been so incredibly kind and understanding in the short time I’ve known them. They gave great counsel with my very senior cat, and when it was time for her to go, they were so wonderful. It was a peaceful and dignified process, and the staff and doctors gave us a compassionate send-off. Thank you so much. This was the first time I’ve had to say goodbye to a lifelong pet, and they made it a very smooth, respectful moment. Thank you for everything!!!

The vets and techs are excellent and professional at both Mosel and Gull Road locations. They have fit us in on short notice when possible even though we're new clients. We definitely appreciate the fee transparency as well. Overall a great experience working with them!

We have been thrilled with the care our dog, Bo has received at Mosel. The whole team is compassionate, kind, knowledgeable, and hard working. They take time to explain things thoroughly, and seem to genuinely care about the pets that come in there. We appreciate their follow ups to check and see how Bo is doing. I will absolutely recommend them to anyone! Thank you Mosel Animal Clinic!!

One of the best Vets in the area. Dr. B brings his west coast energy to the mitten and makes you and your pet feel welcome. Always a positive atmosphere and shoots straight. Decent prices too. Also, don't forget the techs, they're great too. Everyone is friendly and helpful. They also accept care credit and scratch for the people who may not be able to afford vet care right up front. I saw the posters on the walls in the exam rooms. I had to edit this because I mistakenly said they do payment plans. By payment plan, I meant they take care credit and scratch. Thanks you Mosel for specifying that since I hadn't made it clear in my review originally. I've been to plenty of vet offices as a former courier making deliveries and pickups and I can tell you. Mosel is great compared to some of the others when it comes to treating your pet well. Don't let the old building fool you, or the bad reputation from the former ownership that I've heard of. Dr. B cares about his clients and their pets. I'll always go there and will send everyone I can there. They are also very good at communicating with you. Explained every procedure and process to me as well as told me about how my dog would need extra care during her surgery because of her age etc. Very transparent about charges and doesn't throw any surprise charges your way.
