How to Save Money at Southpointe Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We owe so much to the team at Southpoint Veterinary Hospital— they quite literally changed the course of our cat Hubert’s life. When we brought him in, we were preparing to say goodbye. He had been diagnosed at a different hospital with Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, and his hematocrit level was only 8% — when the normal range is between 30% and 50%. But once we sat down with Dr. Wes, everything shifted. He took the time to explain Hubert’s condition in a calm, compassionate, and clear way. He gave us not only understanding, but hope. Thanks to his guidance and the amazing care from the entire team, we were able to start treatment — and today, Hubert is alive, back to his old self and happily settling into his new role as a big brother to our new kitten. Everyone at the clinic has been supportive, kind, and responsive. They answered all of our (many) questions with patience and genuine care. Hubert became a bit of a star there — the staff always remembered him, and you could feel how much they truly cared each time we walked in. We are beyond grateful. This place didn’t just treat our cat. They gave us more time, more memories, and more hope than we thought we’d have. Thank you for everything. 🐾💛

I truly can't say enough good things about Dr. WES, hands down the best vet I've ever taken my pups to! I have two toy poodles, and they absolutely adore him (which says a lot they’re usually picky about people!). He’s not only incredibly knowledgeable and professional, but also so kind, gentle, and genuinely loving toward animals. He treats my dogs like family, always takes time to explain everything clearly, and makes sure they’re comfortable and calm. Whether it's a routine check-up or something more urgent, I know my pups are in the best hands. So grateful to have a vet who truly cares! Highly, highly recommend #1 🐶❤️🐾

Absolutely outstanding care! I brought my 11-year-old terrier mix, Bella, to see Dr. Wes after weeks of frustration. She was losing weight rapidly, lethargic despite a strong appetite, and had started vomiting in the mornings. I had already been to two other vets who dismissed her blood glucose changes as stress-related, but Dr. Wes immediately took a deeper look and actually listened. He not only explained what was really going on, but also started Bella on a prescription diet and medication that made a world of difference. He recommended feeding her at night and giving antacids morning and evening, and it worked like magic. Bella hasn’t vomited since the bust weeks ago, she’s maintaining her weight, and her energy is back like she’s a puppy again! Dr. Wes was incredibly thorough, compassionate, and informative. He calmed my heart when I was overwhelmed and confused, and I can’t thank him enough for getting to the root of the issue when no one else could. I’ve spent so much money at other clinics, but I’m so grateful I finally found the right vet. Highly recommend him. 5 stars isn’t enough!

I have been going to Southpointe for a year and have had great experiences up until my most recent appointment. We waited for 1.5 hours which they said was due to an emergency euthanasia, so I was understanding about the wait since I have dealt with the loss of a pet and understand how difficult it is. When we were eventually seen by Dr. Waseem El-Sinawi the care my animals received was absolutely terrible. He knocked on the door before entering the room which of course caused my dogs to bark. Then he claimed that my younger dog may need a muzzle because his bark sounded “aggressive” when he had made no attempts to get on the dogs’ level or introduce himself to my dogs. He examined my older dog first and barely touched him. He did not do a thorough exam where they feel down their body for lumps, bumps, etc. He checked his teeth and listened to his heart and lungs then said his ears and eyes looked good without even looking at them. He then examined by 1 year old puppy next, the one he was afraid was “aggressive” - he was not aggressive toward the Dr and was fine but I could tell the Dr was nervous and afraid to examine him. He also barely touched my puppy during the examine and kept nervous laughing and acting very skiddish. I believe he was afraid of my dogs because they are pit mixes and made unfair assumptions about their temperament with no basis for his assumptions. The care was negligent and I would never recommend him to anyone. I walked out with a $300+ bill and feeling my animals did not get adequate care. All of the doctors I love have left and I will be finding a new vet.

We have been taking our senior cat here for a year or so and they've been fantastic! Dr. Switzer has been able to treat all of our cats illnesses thus far and we are so grateful for that!
