How to Save Money at South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can’t say good enough things about southpaws! After a three week downhill battle with our dog at two other clinics, my five year-old active girl stopped walking and was miserable. Out of desperation, another clinic referred me to South paws. I called them and they were so sweet on the phone and told us to come on in. we had an hour and 15 minute drive from our house and got there at 4:45 when they closed at 5 PM. Dr. Newton and her team stayed late (like 7:30/8PM!) to evaluate her, give her fluids, and run blood work. The Night Shift nurse was incredible and honestly, the whole staff was just phenomenal. They treat you like part of the family. While she had two overnight stays, we received numerous calls from dr Newton and the team updating us and going over care plan and just brainstorming. Since being home, we have also received many calls checking in on how Willow has been doing. Dr. Newton also kept our vet in Baton Rouge informed and talked to him the night that we brought Willow in to go over everything that we had been dealing with for three weeks. I can’t thank y’all enough. We are forever grateful.

First off, I have never written a review but for this one I had to. I had two dogs, Ciroc (9 yrs old Lab mix) and Ziggy (4 yrs Shi-Poo.) Ciroc had to be put down in March 2024 as he had a tumor. While grieving but yet coping with his loss, within a few weeks, my lil' fur baby Ziggy had a CCL injury and before I could wrap my head around it, he injured the other leg. My world turned upside down and I had to find someone that I could trust with his surgery; I decided to go with South Paws. My consultation was better than I would have expected because I went in nervous with a stress level through the roof. I left feeling okay after Dr. Newton explained thoroughly what I would be dealing with through the entire process. She speaks with a calm and very caring yet knowledgeable attitude that spoke in volumes to me regarding the best care possible for my fur baby Ziggy. Whenever I had questions or any concerns they replied promptly. My experience was a 100 thanks to the awesome caring staff that made me feel comfortable and showering my fur baby with the love and affection to get him through all of this. His recovery was amazing, he hit his goal posts ahead of schedule and is getting stronger and loving his new set of legs that his awesome doctor, Dr. Jenifer Newton, provided him. Thanks South Paws, you all are the best! I would highly recommend without a doubt!

My cat got hit by a car. It was really scary; we weren’t sure she was going to make it. Dr. Blazevich and the team at Southpaws not only saved her life, but made the process as smooth and comforting as possible every step of the way. They continued to reach out to us after the surgeries to be sure healing was going as hoped for. This is a team that cares. Our household is forever grateful.

I returned to South Paws with another of my pets after great success with a previous dog and a wonderful experience with Dr Bob Hancock. He was a miracle worker and gave both me and my pet the much appreciated quality time prior to her death. So I did not hesitate to return. HUGE MISTAKE Hancock's untimely death, a massive turnover in staff, and a new owner have turned this once flagship practice into an apathetic money pit. Highly recommend that prospective customers do their homework. You will be asked for payment in full before anything is done, your pet will be wisked away, and you will not be allowed to observe the Dr exam, or any therapy performed under the guise of deceptive lame excuses. And then receive only a sparce/ albeit worthless record containing no data of what may have been done. Huge red flag when a vet wants to separate owners from pets to perform any observation or procedure without owner's presence. I will miss Dr Hancock's knowledge and mastery. Luckily, there are now alternatives .
