How to Save Money at Pershing Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can not recommend this vet highly enough! We went in for a check up to establish care and check on our cat’s ears. They were so respectful to her, making sure she was secure in her surroundings, and let her climb where ever she was comfortable. The two vet techs we interacted with were super kind and the vet was very knowledgeable and caring. The vet tech even cleaned her ears and showed us how to do it at home in a better way than we had been! Everyone here was so wonderful and had a pet first attitude. We’re so happy we live so close!

My dog was a patient since this office opened. He loved it and so did I! Dr. Jewell and the rest of the staff explained everything so I could understand I never once felt nervous about suggested treatment plans or leaving my dog in their care. They were always so friendly and took such good care of him when he was sick or injured. I am so thankful for this office truly believe my dog is healthy and doing well because of the continued care he received here!

I am so happy we finally have a new vet in the neighborhood. The staff is extremely nice, friendly and caring. Dr. Jewel is amazing! He will take his time to get to know your pet and to ensure your pet is comfortable. He is very knowledgeable and will make sure to give you all the information you need and to explain everything to you even if it takes a bit longer. I used to be with another vet in Hyde Park but I am so happy with the service I receive here that I changed my vet and I have been raving about them to every other dog owner in Hyde Park I know!

THEY SHUT DOWN WITHOUT NOTICE!!! I have been absolutely happy with this clinic for 6 months. Great care and amazing staff and vet. Then they shut down without notice on the 11th of August. Just few days before they confirmed my appointment at the end of the month for getting an international health certificate, which is mandatory to enter EU borders. Without that document my very elderly cat would have to go through quarantine, and likely die in the process. I discovered by pure accident on the 21st they had shut down 10 days earlier! At that point I was BARELY on time to find another vet able to start the procedure. In those 10 days they did not send me any email, text nor called me to tell me they had closed. If I would have discovered that they were shut down on the day of the appointment they had scheduled, it would have been too late for me to get that certificate anywhere else, and I would have had to cancel a very expensive trip. Very very unprofessional! 0/0 do not recommend.

Whether you’re looking for a new vet to go to or unsure if who to trust, this is the place to go. I had a golden retriever who lived to be 17 years old and I strongly believe it was thanks to Dr. Jewell’s outstanding care. He goes above and beyond for all his patients and you can ensure your pet will be well taken care of. The staff is amazing and so caring. I recently got a new puppy and I without a doubt will be bringing her here for all her veterinary needs.
