How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Y’all were the biggest lifesaver… literally! Thanks to the amazing care at VEG our Alaskan malamute is alive! From the moment we stepped in to taking her home I have never felt so supported, welcomed, and cared for by a veterinary team. Our 4 year old malamute is normally very intense at vet appointments- the open floor plan, kind approachability of the staff and flexibility for her we could tell made her feel more at ease. The doctors came and sat on the floor with us while we had all her testing done and helped to talk us through a plan for her next steps. We ended up getting her admitted for overnight care & X-rays. Getting a call at 2:30 in the morning that she would need emergency abdominal surgery or it would be fatal was one of the scariest moments, we rushed right on over and got to be with her while they prepped her for surgery. VEG is unique in such a fantastic way, the open floor plan, ability to stay with your pet, phenomenal communication & truly the best vet care I’ve received- should any other future emergencies arise we will not be going anywhere else. I really appreciated the comprehensive medication take home sheet, as well as the extremely detailed itemized bill( - Also I highly recommend looking into pet insurance)

Dear Dr. McMurray, Dr. Hetrick, Dr. Salzbrenner, Gretta, Ashley, and Lance’s entire care team:: Thank you for saving Lance’s life. Your knowledge, professionalism, kindness, and extraordinary care exceeded my expectations. Dr. McMurray, thank you for calling during your time off with the radiologist's results. Your proactive communication and seamless handoff to Dr. Hetrick ensured Lance was in great hands right when we arrived for his re-check and chest X-Rays. Dr. Hetrick was thorough and compassionate in her exam. We were so grateful to be admitted and to spend the night with Lance in a private room. Dr. Hetrick monitored him continuously over-night and when I woke up, Dr Salzbrenner and her nurse, Gretta, had been briefed and he was under their care. Dr. Salzbrenner’s diagnostic expertise and initiative in consulting with the specialists at ISU Small Animal Hospital secured his vital referral. Ashley safely drove Lance to ISU while Gretta expertly administered oxygen the entire trip. They waited for me in the parking lot and upon arrival gave me an update and ensure I knew where to go. Lance was already back in triage and receiving care before I arrived. Lance spent the next several days in the ICU, and without your expert diagnosis, dedicated care, and critical medical transport, I do not believe he would have survived. I cannot thank you all enough for ensuring he received the absolute best treatment. We are forever grateful, Jen

I can not thank everyone here enough. They were all extremely kind, helpful, supportive and went out of their way for my kids, myself and our GC Conure that passed away. I am so very grateful for everything they did I truly can not express it enough. They were genuine and respectful about the cremation process. Seriously- THANK YOU ALL! You made a terrible experience a lot less terrible to navigate through. Thank you for allowing us space and time in the room to grieve and decide. I don’t think I would have handled his death so well had I not driven to you all. My husband and I will be sending a donation in the next week. 🖤🖤🖤

My boyfriend and I brought our puppy in as he had swallowed one of my earrings. We had a bad experience with a previous dog and Blue Pearl so we were on edge as expected. This ER was the best experience. They were very understanding and very kind and let you be with your baby. They also provide quotes before doing anything and charge less than most places. If I could give 10 stars I would! Thank you to all the people who helped us out.🩷

I unfortunately had to stop on tonight when my bunny, Stanley Tucci, was experiencing what I suspected to be the onset of some GI stasis, which can be deadly in bunnies. We called in beforehand to see if they could get him in and they were super helpful and had us fill everything out ahead of time so there was no paperwork once we got in. When we arrived, we were immediately shown to a spotless room and were able to talk with Dr. Hetrick almost immediately. Dr. Hetrick confirmed my suspicions and was able to start a plan to get him back to his normal self rather quickly. Our nurse tonight was Brooke and she was incredible. Upon discharge she even made sure I knew how long she would be there if I needed anything else and reassured me tbat even after she left for the night, another staff member with extensive exotic pet care experience would be available should anything else come up. Both Brooke and Dr. Hetrick were able to quickly diagnose Stanley, communicate a plan to me, and help soothe my frazzled nerves all while dealing with a number of other clients at the same time. It was very impressive. Another thing I appreciated was that at no point was Stanley Tucci ever out of my sight. They made sure I could be there with him through every test, procedure, and even let me look in while he was getting his X-Rays done. No one ever wants to go to the ER vet, or any ER in general, but I am incredibly grateful this one exists, especially with an exotic in my care. Thank you VEG ER!!
