How to Save Money at UrgentVet

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Everyone was super attentive and caring for my big boy while we were there. The facility was very clean and very neat. They made me feel like they really cared about my dog.

Very clean, friendly atmosphere. The technician and vet were both efficient and provided honest, professional opinions for us with a range of options and clear cost expectations when we had to come in on a Saturday outside of our regular vet’s hours. We would certainly use them again if we ever have another urgent concern.

We were super impressed with UrgentVet! It seems like our pup always is sickest after regular vet hours or during the weekend. We brought him in around 9:00 PM once his sickness started getting worse. We were able to walk right into UrgentVet and we loved how easy it was - especially with no reception area, our pup often gets anxious in said situations, and being welcomed right into a smaller room. The whole place was incredibly clean as well. Our tech was incredibly kind, communicative through every step, and thorough in hearing our concerns. Our Dr. was also fantastic - she praised our efforts in watching our pup’s health and management of his sensitive stomach, which is the best feeling as a pet parent. They were both incredibly kind and comforting to our pup the entire time - even sitting on the floor, which is a corgi’s favorite thing as a lowrider! We also very much appreciated the ability to have a say in our treatment options. We left feeling relieved with a thorough diagnosis and plan to help our guy feel better while also not feeling overwhelmed with the cost of care especially for how well we were treated! It meant so much to be able to have an after hour option and not have to worry throughout the night and until we could get an appointment at our regular vet. Would highly recommend UrgentVet and thank you to our Dr. and tech!

I am not usually one to write reviews but I had such a wonderful experience at urgentvet I felt the need to! My dog Beef snagged some corn on the cob from my toddler at dinner time and ate the entire thing. We were unsure if he swallowed it whole or chewed it but when you google it says it’s bad for dogs to eat corn on the cob and to seek veterinary care immediately. It was a weekend and so our normal vet wasn’t open so we called UrgentVet about 30 minutes before they closed for the night and they encouraged us to come in. As soon as I got there they were ready to do imaging and sent me home with a plan for the night and a plan to follow up the next afternoon as there was nothing concerning showing on the imaging at that time. They were very transparent on pricing and an extra perk was that at the follow up the next day I did not have to pay for another assessment and the repeat X-rays were much cheaper than the day prior. My dog ended up being completely fine and passed the chunks of corn cob without issues within a couple of days (this review also serves as a PSA to NOT let your dogs have corn on the cob!!) The vet and techs on Sunday night as well as Monday afternoon were wonderful and sat down and talked with me and made sure I was comfortable with the plan. I had a great experience and am so glad this business is in West Des Moines!
