How to Save Money at Animal Friends Dermatology

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Wow. Just wow. Was evaluated by them and diagnostics run for our dog with chronic ear infections to the tune of over $400 (just for an eval).allergy testing was an additional $400 and change. This was done only 6 months ago. Called again to try and get in because our vet said he needs a video otoscopy and there is "nothing" else she can do. Well we had to save some for the next appointment. The girl on the phone told me that he needs 1. Another eval even though it has been only months ($120), 2. Diagnostics with labs, cultures etc ($600). So I asked if that included the video otoscopy. Oh no she says. That runs anywhere from $800-$2000. Is it at least done on the same visit, since we would be driving 2 hours to get there? I asked. No maam she says, that's another appointment. I told her he was only there 6 months ago. She didnt care. I told her that was a ton of money to pay again when we just did all that. Didn't care. I told her that my dog has pus in his ears, likely has permanent hearing loss from chronic ear infections and is yelping when you touch his ears....DIDN'T care!!! I asked is there nothing we can do that is a little more cost effective, she told me that those are the prices then proceeded to cut me off and ask if I was going to book an appointment or not!? When I said no I don't think so, before I could even finish that sentence, she hung up on me!!!! Zero compassion!!! Money gouging people with no compassion for animals!!! I swear they try and deter you by smugly telling you their very high prices. Just dont care. Why would you get into veterinary medicine and not care about the animals or people you serve. Horrible place. Horrible.

We're so happy to have our dog back. This place is a God- send. Dr. Bartlett has really helped our fur baby to have some quality years by addressing allergens and skin problems. The only issue I ever have is the ridiculously long wait. It appears maybe the office double books at times. If that is the case, it would be courteous for the office to at least compensate for the extra 30-45 minute waiting time. Time is money!

I am so grateful to Dr. Keppel and the staff for helping out my baby girl! We have been battling allergies for the last 10 years, with things getting totally unmanageable the last year. After exhausting all efforts at our regular vet, we tried a dermatologist and finally have seen significant & positive improvement! I’m so happy she is finally getting the relief she needed so badly! Highly recommend this practice ❤️

I can’t recommend this clinic enough! I finally feel like we have information about what is going on with our dog’s ear infection. Ely was a super sweet tech and the doctor was very informative and answered all of our questions. Poncci says thank you so much for all of your kindness and for your help with her ears.
