How to Save Money at Island Animal Hospital at Viera

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am beyond grateful to the doctor and the whole staff for the kind and professional care they’ve given my dog Kawaii. Since her very first visit, they have been attentive, compassionate, and dedicated, always providing the best care. Today, with her surgery, they went above and beyond, taking care of every detail and giving us peace of mind during such a stressful moment. Their passion for animals and commitment to their owners truly shows. I highly recommend them 100%!

Island animal hospital is simply amazing. Matt, Erin and everyone on their staff have always gone above and beyond. We started taking our Akita, Maui there years ago and we were always treated like family. They explained everything, gave us every option and always supported us with the choice we made. As Maui aged and treatments became more complicated, they were there every step of the way. The most incredible part came when it was time to say goodbye to Maui. The compassion, kindness and care they showed to our family was unbelievable. We could not have asked for anything more as we went through a very difficult time. A short while afterwards we received a card from them. The entire staff had taken the time to write messages to us. What an incredible gesture. We can’t thank them enough. This is the way every business should be run. Thank you!!

Absolute lifesaver. I live in St. Cloud and have to choose between exotic vets in the Melbourne area or Orlando. There are plenty to choose from, none conveniently close, some with poor reputations, and there's also the issue of getting in quickly when you have a problem come up. I asked a new reptile friend today (who lives in this area) which clinic she liked best & she said hands down this 1. I called & they managed to get me in same-day as a walkin! Cassie was the most attentive & detailed tech, regardless of whether or not she's a reptile person she definitely was getting all the appropriate info down. Dr Berkbeck (spelling?) 1 of 2 Drs they have who sees reptiles, was very kind & helpful with my panther chameleon. He was willing to give me the immediate treatment that I was really hoping would be available, rather than forcing me to wait until there was a surgery opening to receive any care, which is what 1 of the Orlando clinics was going to do. That place was understandably booked already but their only option for me was to push off my exam & diagnostics until Monday when they could potentially also do the surgery she may need on that same day. But she could've died by then. This place was also fully booked & understood the urgency & allowed me to wait for walkin availability to be seen at least, even if she did need surgery that couldnt be performed today. I'm so relieved to have her given some treatment immediately. Whether it works or not, I was able to do SOMETHING for her today & I'm very optimistic it will work. Moreso just relieved to have been heard & given the chance that I was scared she wouldn't be able to get. They also said to call tomorrow if I have issues & the other reptile Dr will be available. The receptionist & tech staff were very nice & wished me a safe drive multiple times (coming from an hour away). Love that they're open Saturdays for decent hours (I believe they said until 4, most places close at noon). And their prices were not insanely upmarked which is unfortunately really common among exotic vets. This is my new go-to place for sure. Thank you all

I love Island Animal Hospital! My cat had an emergency, they got her in within a few hours on a Friday. As soon as I got there I got straight back. They go over the prices and break everything down before they do anything. I loved that they are straightforward and don't hide prices. Island animal hospital is priced very well. I didn't have my cats records with me, the front office called the humane society and hospital and got them so I did not have to worry about it.The only complaint I could say is that they are so great I wish they could be a 24/7 hospital. They also are super gentle with your animals. I'm so thankful for all the staff and how committed they are to make you and your animal feel better. I wanna give credit where credit is deserved and Dr. Shedd you are amazing at what you do. I’m so thankful Swayz has you as her Dr! Just a few words to describe Dr. Shedd she is understanding, smart, compassionate, Empathetic and hopeful. Some of the other techs that are super helpful and great are Kelly, Leighann, and Riley. I also want to thank the front office for all that they do.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

We are so grateful to Island Animal Hospital in Viera for their kindness and compassion during one of the most difficult moments of our lives—saying goodbye to our beloved dog, Davy. From the moment we arrived, the entire team treated us and our dog with such care and respect. The veterinarian and the vet tech were absolutely wonderful—patient, gentle, and understanding. They gave us all the time we needed, never rushing us or making us feel pressured in any way. Their empathy and professionalism brought us comfort in our grief, and we will always remember how they made this painful experience a little more bearable. Thank you for treating our dog—and us—with such dignity and love!
