How to Save Money at Suburban Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We made the difficult decision to opt for BE. Despite the significance of our situation of an infant in the home with 50-pound increasingly reactive pitbull, the office offered a multi-month trial of further medication (she was already on two separate medications that just left her in a constant state of depressed/reclusive/sedated/reactive), shelter options beyond what we had already extensively searched, and ultimately in our opinion the impression as though we should be ashamed for trying to protect our family after a 3 year-long struggle of trying to support our beloved dog. I want to be clear that there is a stark difference between reassurance of hope/a workable situation compared to them wanting to work on it despite the risk to your family. We received the latter. After the offensive consult, they even tried to charge us $70 knowing they weren’t willing to help us as intended for the visit and that we’d have to endure even more pain continuing the process elsewhere. It was excruciating. Endangering children is not compassion. These are the same type of people who would hate/blame us God forbid something occurred to our child despite their own failure to treat our dog and take concerns more seriously along the way—we’ve all heard the stories. This is how that happens. Just awful. We made the right choice and wish we had support instead of judgement along that path. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone. It’s been almost a week and they did not follow up with us, not even to provide support for our other dog that has also been in their long-term care and now grieving with us. It feels like to them, Oreo was just a number. To us, she’s loved and terribly missed.

The entire staff was amazing. My dog was limping and not eating. So I made an appointment for him to be seen there. The entire staff was nice the vet took her time to check my dog out and make sure she gave me the best thing to help him. My dog definitely has a new vet. Her assistant was also great with my dog. These guys get 5 stars from me.

My old boy went in with a double ear infection and a hematoma. Unfortunately, it would be multiple visits back due to the severity of the infection. It just kept coming back. Spent 7 weeks in a cone and 6 weeks with his left ear pinned back in a head wrap. However, through the weeks of having spent there, I feel the staff had grown to know and love my guy, Finn. They treated him so well and showed so much compassion toward him. I felt a good vibe there overall. I can't comment on the fees bc my visit was a unique one. Although, the doctor waived the office visits bc of how often I had come. That was nice. No matter the dollar saved, I was grateful. I will continue seeing their office and Dr Nipper for regular yearly visits.

I just absolutely can’t say enough good things about Suburban. I have followed Dr. Davis from her previous place and it is ALWAYS worth the drive. She is thorough, never charging extra for excessive fees just exactly what your dog needs and always gets to the bottom of the issue. She is so kind and patient with my all of my dogs and I’m forever grateful to her. Her entire staff from the techs to the amazing front staff ladies, they just hit the mark on everything. Thank you so much for always taking such good care of us over the years!

Suburban Animal Hospital is a wonderful place to take your fur baby. I recently took my 4 dogs in, all of different ages and breeds, and the vets were wonderful with them. Dr. Ziegler made my dogs feel comfortable and at ease, and even got on the floor with them!! Both he and Dr. Meir made suggestions regarding blood work, but there is no hard sell for any products or vaccines. I really like taking my fur children here and as soon as you enter the door, the staff at the desk are warm and inviting and the techs are super friendly. You cannot ask for a better center for a neighborhood vet.
