How to Save Money at Backos Bird Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best bird Dr. in the county if not state for sure. He doesn't break the bank he genuinely cares about your bird. He's my birds Dr for life.

I found this doctor to be really efficient and made me feel very confident as a new Parrot mom... He explained everything he was doing and what had to be done why it needed to be done ... the person that gave this Clinic a bad review I believe was in total grief from losing a loved family member.unfortunately that parrot must have been really sick and I can't believe that it died because of the staff or the doctor. I find them to be all extremely caring and knowledgeable. I have asked many questions and all of them answered and they made me feel very confident and thankful that I found this Clinic. The entire Clinic is very clean and runs efficiently 24/7.. in the waiting room I have met people that have driven over 45 to 50 miles one way just to come to this particular bird Clinic to THIS doctor, that in itself speaks volumes.

WoW , the Doctor, technician, and staff were fantastic. We drove a long way to see the Doctor. He took time to speak to me about my bird to discuss her seizures and advise me . When we came there we waited outside. I was amazed at all the people dropping of their birds an picking them up. All of them praised Dr. BACKOS and staff, which made me extremely happy to be here.

PLEASE READ BEFORE TAKING YOUR VET TO THIS CLINIC! I have six birds so you can imagine with so many birds there are always things happening. I found this clinic a couple of months ago and felt so happy and relieved since the place is filled with aviary specialists. The first time I had gone was due to my bird Shiloh having a broken leg. They gave me the proper medication which helped me aid her back to her healthy normal self. Since then I had constantly taken my birds to them. That was until a week ago I noticed the clinic was having a downfall. Their staff failed to give me invoices before giving my birds treatment meaning they would treat the bird then expect me to pay 600 dollars, which I honestly have no issue paying but I would like to know what is being done with my bird prior. Recently, I took my bird Shiloh to them for a follow up hence since the broken leg she randomly got an ear infection that I had been treating her for. In the follow-up, I made sure to tell them multiple times to call me before anything is done. They finally did so, I spoke on the phone with the doctor and he recommended blood work and an X-ray. The blood work came out fine and he told me her X-ray was all good but he did notice she was breathing heavier than usual but only sometimes not all the time. He recommended for me to leave her under their care since she needed antibiotic injections that I was unable to give to her. I called the next morning around 12 to see how she was and the technician told me she was not making much noise, she was barely eating and so they tubbed-fed her. My bird is a picky eater so I didn't think much of it when they said she wouldn't eat their food. The technician said the doctor will give me a call. I called again at 5 since I hadn't received a call and a different technician answered the phone and told me they had a little mishap earlier where she was coughing blood. I was completely shocked as my bird had never done that before and they didn't tell me this until later on in the day. Not only that but the doctor himself told me her X-ray was good and now supposedly she has liver damage from them handling her so they didn't want to handle her so much. Again they told me the doctor would call. I waited and waited and it was 20 min before closing time and he still hadn't called. I called again and it went straight to their voicemail. The doctor never called. I call them this morning around 9:30 very frustrated and angry since they never called me back and I asked to speak with the doctor. They tell me the doctor does not go in until 12 so I can speak with the technician. I was put on hold for 30 MINUTES until the doctor himself who they claimed was not there answered the phone and told me my bird passed away. I was completely flabbergasted. I was hysterically crying and told them I would give them a callback. I then call back and ask to pick up my bird, the receptionist Christina told me to give them a couple of hours, and I asked why? SINCE THE BIRD IS ALREADY DEAD! She goes on to tell me that they are really busy in the back and I remind her that my bird is dead I just need to pick her up and she goes on to say well they are treating "living" birds in the back and emergencies. I was floored, by the lack of sympathy the staff had for my bird. THEY DIDN'T EVEN CALL ME WHEN SHE DIED I CALLED THEM. These people do not give you a heads up for anything! PLEASE DO NOT BRING YOUR BIRD HERE THEY DO NOT TAKE CARE OF IT PROPERLY! VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! Below I attached a photo of my babygirl active, chirping, and happy. Now because of the lack of care these people had this is the last photo I took of her. May she Rest In Peace, I love you Shiloh.

I’ve never encountered such unprofessionalism let alone at a clinic. 8/26 I had a 1:15 appointment for my precious umbrella cockatoo. I arrived 10 minutes early and the first red flag I was not greeted once coming through the door. I had to say hello first. This was my first time as a client here and of course my Rossi first time as a patient here and OF COURSE I filled out the necessary new patient paperwork where I listed my phone number. Ready to go into the examination room I was told that I could either wait and stay in the waiting room or leave and come back because the exams would take about 2 hours and told that I would receive a phone call once they were done. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN. Once 4 o’clock striked I decided to start driving back to the clinic from FTL and thought maybe on my way in the car I would receive a call. The appointment was @ 1:15 @ 4:55 I decided to call and ask when she was going to be done so I can pick her up. The receptionist named SHAYTAY but goes by “TAY” (in the purple) was very rude on the phone! Told me that my bird was ready an hour ago and that I was given a call and text message from them. THAT WAS A LIE. I explained to her on the phone no one called me and TAYS attitude shifted completely left being very adamant on the phone that I just basically ignored their call/messages and RUDELY hung up on me while I was talking to her. Once I arrived to the clinic there was TAY on the work phone, I imagine talking to another client. Another lady at the front kindly greeted me and TAY VERY RUDE while herself talking to someone on the phone already blurbs out yelling so the back staff can hear her “the girl that we have been calling and texting is here for her bird” and interrupts the conversation I am having with the other lady BY TAPPING HER LONG GHETTO NAILS on the counter very dramatically over and over demanding the assistant to show me the phone calls and text messages where they were supposedly calling me (all while she’s on the phone). She showed me and the number was wrong :) Then she began to show me some paperwork where my wrong number was listed trying to make it seem like I myself listed my own number wrong! I kindly asked to show me my paperwork that I filled out earlier for first time patient and there I see my paperwork with my handwriting with the correct number listed. I can not explain how taken back I was by THIS WOMEN. To continue this horrible experience she then tried to take into her own account to be fake nice by saying that my bird has been scared/screaming and not letting no one come near her. To recall that when I walked in to the clinic to pick her up I have not heard no screaming UNTIL she went in the examination room where my cockatoo was left alone in a dark room and screaming at the top of her lungs scared when she went in the room. I had to kindly ask the other lady to tell this TAY to get away from my bird. I walked in the room and have never seen my cockatoo so scared she immediately rushed to crawl on me. BAFFLED is not even the word. Of course she was scared what negative aura this lady had. In the lady wearing the green scrub top defense was that TAY is new…what does new have anything to do with manners? Lastly for the cherry on top I paid all this money for the doctor to have no interest in taking in account to introduce himself to the owner of his patient :) Sad that everyone was apologizing for this lady’s actions. 8/29 I received a voicemail from SUSIE with threat messages. Returned call, asked for HR info. The women who answered the phone named CAROL, stated she was HR and the manager. She put me on hold to have this psychotic woman SUSIE to remove me from hold to try and have a feud on the phone. SUSIE! calling a client from your work phone harassing & leaving threatening voicemails is illegal. I asked to speak to her boss, and she said “not happening”. Asked for HR‘s info and she said “no such thing” and hung up on me. COMPLETELY UNETHICAL! I can see why the staff chose to work with animals because they do not know how to speak to people.
