How to Save Money at Veterinary Medical Hospital Of Clearwater

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It was 5am when I noticed our Benji's signs of intestinal blockage. I made an appt request online not soon after, and started driving to the hospital to get there right when they opened. I got a call back first thing that morning even before we had arrived. I was worried that the hospital might be too busy to fit Benji in for imaging, but the hospital saw it was an emergency and gave Benji and x-ray and ultrasound after a very short wait. It turned out that he did have a blockage, and the nature of it meant that he may lose feet of small intestine if he didn't have the foreign body surgically removed soon. Although the hospital had it's hands full and couldn't bump anyone to treat Benji, Dr. V referred us to his spouse, Dr. Parker, who was working at another hospital that day. We couldn't have been more grateful for the referral; it is difficult to find same-day appointments for surgery, and a place like BluePearl would have been really tough for us financially. We sped over to Dr. Parker and she saved Benji's life. Two weeks later, we met her and the Veterinary Hospital of Clearwater team who took wonderful care of him during his initial imaging to remove his staples. Both teams that day treated Benji like he was one of their own. We're very happy to say that we can feel safe about our boys' medical care as long as the Veterinary Hospital of Clearwater and the team are nearby.

Best vet I have ever been to. They cared so much for my sweet dog throughout his life once we moved to Florida a few years ago and were so kind and compassionate always. He was always a nervous boy, but never with them and that goes to show how wonderful they are. Now they are my trusted favorites for my new puppy and I’m so grateful as a pet owner for the peace of mind. They truly love the animals and it shows!

100/10! I absolutely love the team here! I have an Italian Greyhound who broke his leg and unfortunately has needed lots and lots of care. The team here gets him in fast when needed, highly informative and also gets me what I need for my little guy fast! We love the new doc there and I am so happy to finally have a vet who understands Italian Greyhounds! Deek and I, love you all bunches and thank you for loving my little guy the way I do!

I’m a relatively new “dog mom” but I did a lot of research before choosing a veterinary practice. I cannot put into words how the Veterinary Medical Hospital of Clearwater and Dr. Vassallo have exceeded my every expectation. Dr. Vassallo and his staff are phenomenal! From my first phone call there, I was greeted with such warmth, patience and genuine concern. My sweet pup has had several visits and a surgical procedure over the past few months and during each and every visit, he was dealt with such love and attention, and provided with quality care and professionalism. All my questions and concerns are always addressed with patience, great information, guidance and resources. I am so happy that my sweet boy is in such great hands at the Veterinary Medical Hospital of Clearwater and highly recommend this amazing practice to all pet owners.

This is the best vet we’ve ever been to. In desperation, we brought my cat Lily here after going twice to a different vet and being misdiagnosed and given incorrect medication. She kept getting worse but once we brought her here she was finally treated for her illness and she was better within days (after being sick for weeks.) About a month later, I thought she ate something and took her in and I was so happy with how transparent and helpful they were with her care. The vet took me back to look at her XRAYS and ultrasound and explained everything to me. Thankfully nothing was in her stomach but she had an upset stomach and still needed treatment. He treated her and she is like a brand new cat. I have 3 cats and they will ALL be coming here from now on. Thank you!!!!
