How to Save Money at Harborside Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I just wanted to take a moment And write an absolute wonderful review about this veterinary Office! I was in Absolute panic when my two year-old French bulldog woke up, not eating, Acting extremely lethargic and my normal vet could not take him in because they were too. “busy”, Which is absolute BS because they know I have insurance with their clinic, but this wonderful clinic took me in immediately because it was in walking distance of my apartment, I had no wait time! The staff was extremely friendly and kind!!! And I think I was in and out of there in less than 30 minutes, When normally at my other vet, I’m there for almost 3 ridiculous hours. Dr. Walk Was very kind, funny and sweet💞 With normally going to a vet just to walk in it’s usually just a little under $100….. And when everything was said and done, they respected the fact that I wanted to just take a little bit to make sure and wait it out, And see if he just needed some rest before making any rash decisions…. And they absolutely respected that, And the girl at the front gave me a coupon and I walked out of there seeing a veterinarian spending less than $40!!! Which is completely unheard of an amazing! So thank you to all of the staff and Dr Walk For putting my mind at ease, I would highly recommend seeing this vet’s office!! My boy is resting and feeling so much better

We are incredibly grateful for Harborside Animal Hospital and their amazing staff. Every interaction with every employee was filled with compassion, professionalism, and genuine care. During one of the hardest moments, having to put our sweet dog Oliver down- Dr. Garcia and her technician were extremely empathetic and supportive, helping us feel comforted and understood during a very emotional time. Additionally, last year Oliver underwent bladder stone removal surgery and Dr. Walk took the best care of him. This was his fourth removal surgery, and by far his best and easiest recovery even at an older age of 14. Oliver had his prior surgeries at different veterinary clinics and the difference in his precise incision, and mood was noticeable. The care and attention made all the difference. We highly recommend this clinic to anyone seeking exceptional veterinary care for their loved ones❤️

Please save yourself the money and headache and do not ever go to this Vet. They are nothing but a bunch of opportunistic money suckers, with little skill, utter regard fr you r your pet, and extremely unprofessional. Not just the doctors, but the entire staff there at the front desk, as well. They will say whatever they need to say to avoid any responsibility for what they are doing. They just take take take as much as they can from you, with little to no regard for you or your pets care. They performed a procedure, then botched it, and wanted to blame it on anything else other than the fact the doctor didn’t know what they were doing (and even had said so). Now my pet is permanently handicapped! Not a care in the world! They don’t call to see how your pet is doing, and ask for more money to “fix” the problem, and send you on your way. I’ve been horrified with the level of greed, manipulation, and disrespect here. Not just the worst vet place here, but anywhere I’ve gone has been better. Needless to say, you’re better off at the local SPCA than here! Watch out for this one! Prepare yourselves, they instantly come back and turn things around to benefit them, (manipulatively, mind you, with sheepskin clothes on,) with all the reasons YOU are at fault, not them!! Don’t get scammed!! Oh and specific vets to avoid are ‘Drs’ Melissa Walk, and Daniel Garcia, but the whole staff works in cahoots.

We were grateful that they were able to take our dog in right after we adopted her and help point us in the right direction with her care. However, the pricing is very high, and appointments often involve long waits, at least two hours between tests and paperwork. The main reason we continued coming for a year was because of Heather and Dr. Garcia, who were both wonderful. Unfortunately, our experiences with the rest of the staff, especially the front desk, were difficult. Overall, I’m thankful for the care they provided, but we have since found a better office.

The entire crew here is excellent. Dr Garcia has always understood the special needs of my blind and deaf dog, who also has a heart murmur. She has always listened, adjusted her diagnosis and medications to his needs, and doesn’t make the dog parent feel bad when we have to do unconventional things (Aka pill medication is extremely hard as his nose is too good.). Today we had to go in as Wally had scratched his face and it wasn’t healing well. It ended up being a far bigger issue than I was aware of. Still, they allow me to hold him for certain procedures- less stress to him- and did an excellent job with his care. Since he can’t have surgery due to his heart, she also came up with a full plan onf care for him and our follow ups. I have been with other vets in the area prior to Harborside, and know this is the best care around for my Walter. Take home care pictures in the review.
