How to Save Money at Companion Animal Dental Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

By far, the BEST, most comprehensive dental services, and likely the best medical customer service I've ever received (for human or animal)! I was impressed by the level of detail, care, and follow up. And surprisingly, less expensive than similar services at my vet. Highly recommended! Dr. Herrman, her office manager and staff were all kind, friendly and professional, and i felt that I was receiving customized care for my pet. Skip your regular vet and get all pet dental care here! You get an initial exam (no sedation) and consult with Dr. Herrman, and leave with a detailed report of what was found, with great photos of the teeth (my vet was impressed with these, especially considering that the dog wasn't sedated), and very clear instructions on prep for the procedure and what to expect! The day of the dental cleaning and/or surgery, the doctor personally called me after they took the xrays, to let me know exactly what was found and her surgical plan of action. After the detal cleaning and surgery, I got a second call from Dr Herrman letting me know how it went and how my dog was doing in recovery. That day, I received a detailed report, which included what was done, before-and-after photos, and post-operative care instructions. Lastly, you also get a follow-up appointment, where Dr. Herrman examines how the surgucal site healing is progressing, and goes over proper home dental care. This was so different from a previous dental cleaning experience (at a regular vet), where there was no pre-consult, no detailed report or pics, no review of home dental care practices, and where I was told to just drop off the dog and later pick him up (they extracted 6 teeth, but no post-op follow-up). I didn't even know that such specialized services were available. I only discovered this because my senior dog has kidney disease, and my regular vet had recommended consulting a dental specialist because their expertise and efficiencty would minimize the time that my dog would be under anesthetic.

We traveled 90 minutes to this practice and it was absolutely worth it! The doctors and staff were so welcoming and very helpful. They made a treatment plan specific to our cat's needs, complete with X-rays and clear photographs pre and post surgery. Communication before, during, and after the surgery was extremely helpful. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for high quality dental care.

Nothing but amazing things to say about Dr. Herrman and her team! My girl finally has relief from the tooth condition that I can only assume was causing her a lot of pain because now she is the most vibrant happy kitty again! I would 100% recommend companion animal dental. They are thorough and made me feel completely comfortable leaving her in their care

Great experience with everyone. I shopped around for my dogs dental care and am very happy we did. This is what they specialize in and only this. Their prices were the best around and even though my little guy had to get some teeth removed (6) their fees were around the same as others just for the cleaning. Will definitely be coming back as I appreciate their care and expertise. Also book early as the book up far in advance.

I took my recently adopted cat, Mervin, to Companion Animal Dental Services for a full mouth extraction due to dental disease and stomatitis. From start to finish, the experience was exceptional. The team was incredibly thorough and clearly passionate about the pets they treat, providing a level of care that exceeded my expectations! While they do book up quickly, I appreciated their willingness to accommodate our schedule by calling us when cancellations arose. Mervin received top-notch care, and their detailed, itemized cost breakdown was transparent and straightforward. I noticed a previous review mentioning concerns about the clinic “holding their pet until payment,” but it seemed that reviewer may not have fully understood the paperwork provided by the vet. The clinic clearly outlines their policies, and I had no issues in that regard. Mervin's case had its challenges, but he ended up on the lower end of the initial quote, which was a pleasant surprise. The paperwork we received included clear instructions for pre-surgery medication, drop-off, and expectations for pick-up and payment. When I picked him up the Vet discussed the surgery and clearly outlined aftercare that I was responsible for. She made it clear that I could call if I had any questions or concerns as he was healing. We visited for the follow up and they did a thorough check and ensured he was healing properly. The drive from Southern Connecticut was absolutely worth it for the excellent care Mervin received. I highly recommend Companion Animal Dental Services for anyone seeking compassionate and professional dental care for their pets.
