How to Save Money at Veterinary Specialty Hospital Roseville

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The place is relatively new and we've only been once thankfully. It was an excellent experience. We've had multiple rescue dogs over many years so we've been to various emergency vets plenty of times (VCA👀), every time it was pretty frantic and traumatic. This is the first time everything went smoothly and we felt treated with care. Our 16 year old dog was accidentally given Tylenol. Tylenol is toxic and must be treated immediately. We were pretty scared when we arrived, staff was expecting us as we had called on the way. They got our guy in back and began treatment immediately. Treatment was a success, staff got us into a room and we were able to speak to both the RVT, Nichole and Doctor Mens. We felt very well cared for and absolutely no complaints. Highly recommend this establishment! Thank you for saving our boy, Moose! ❤️

Absolutely highest most professional places not just a urgent care/ hospital. Everyone was friendly, professional and made you feel like family and they cared and treated my pet like it was there own. This is my 2nd time I used them and both times were just really Great. They found the issue really quick and was able to fix it. My cat is doing wonderful with a total turnaround.

Had an emergency service Friday at 8pm and they were happy to help! I didn’t make it in till about 8:30pm cause the drive. Overall, by midnight I was picking up my little man and the huge foxtail from his ear was removed ☺️ thank you very much VSH for getting Nikko comfortable again and confirming no infection had started! Overall, cost for sedation and emergency vet was very understandable!

Our little Morkie had ingested 50 g of dark chocolate and she was throwing up. We drove like the wind to get her help. Our vet recommended the Specialty Hospital in Roseville. They took her in immediately and began all kinds of things to make sure she would live through the night. It was a terrible ordeal, but they were so kind and so efficient that they took the terror out of it. Today our little girl is ready to play and she is eating and drinking water like she should.I highly recommend this place for the kind people and the excellent care the doctors gave. When your little fur baby is on the brink of death, it is so scary and so horrible that you need calm and reassuring voices of people who know what they’re doing and who care. I pray we never need to return but I’m glad to know they are there ready to help if we ever do.

I brought my 9‑month‑old Great Dane mix to the hospital on a Saturday at 8:30 a.m. because he had been throwing up bile and I was worried about possible bloat. A tech came into the lobby, took one quick look at him, and said, “He looks fine,” then told me I’d have to wait because the other tech wouldn’t arrive until 9:00. When you’re dealing with a giant‑breed puppy showing symptoms that can become life threatening, that kind of dismissal is extremely unsettling. After waiting, we did see the veterinarian. She was kind, professional, and explained the next steps clearly. Later in the day I was called to pick him up and was told he needed to start prescription dog food. However, no one not the tech or the front desk provided any information about how to obtain the prescription food. No written prescription, no instructions, nothing. I had to call my personal vet, who explained that I needed a written prescription and that the food had to be purchased at PetSmart. This is basic discharge information that should have been provided. Overall, the veterinarian was great, but the tech staff’s communication and the discharge process were frustrating and disappointing.
