How to Save Money at Douglas Boulevard Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Schwab and Vet Tech Ben are truly wonderful. We came in for a visit today to have some concerns assessed with our cat who is 11. We took her to another provider twice in the last 6 weeks who was difficult to communicate with, quick and nearly lacking on the assessment, lacked gentility with our anxious cat, and who was very impatient and reactive with our questions. Dr. Schwab spent a good amount of time assessing our cat, with a kind and gentle demeanor that our cat responded to well. She spoke intelligently and gave us clear options of next steps for care. She was professional, knowledgeable, and methodical about her approach in today’s visit. Ben was also kind and very gentle and was there every step supporting both Dr. Schwab in her assessment as well as our cat who was struggling with the visit. Thank you for caring so much! Side note, previously Dr. Schwab also treated our rescue kitten from the shelter who was extremely ill. She was quick, decisive, and kind all at the same time. We won’t seek care from anyone else again for our cats. She is the best!!!

We have been taking our pets to Douglas Blvd Veterinary clinic for 10 years and we have never had a disappointing experience. The staff have always been kind, careful and informative. Wonderful Vet and I would highly recommend them to my friends and family.

Over the past few decades, Douglas Blvd. Veterinary Clinic has taken care of every pet (dog and/or cat/s) we have had with love, compassion and competence. It's been a few years since saying good-bye to our dog (during covid, in which we could not go inside, and Dr. Foster agreed to allow us to be with our beloved pup outside during the process, and stay as long as we needed), and we showed up with our new kitty for her first visit. While staff has increased, and some processes are now available online, the personalized service, care and love remains the same. Everyone is so friendly, caring and competent. I cannot recommend Douglas Blvd. Veterinary Clinic highly enough.

This vet clinic is the BEST. They are friendly, warm, and inviting. Explain everyrhing clearly and do not up charge you, only what is truly necessary. Never once felt like a sales pitch, and everyone listened to my concerns thoroughly. My dog has high "stranger danger" and about 5 minutes in, he wanted to be everyone's friend! Thank you Dr. Flanagan and Kacey for taking such good care of Grogu! Update: Saw a new doctor today for an emergency situation. We were fit in to see Dr. Schwab (spelling). She was outstanding! She explained everything in detail, made sure not to do any unnecessary treatments, made my cat feel safe and he didn't even need sedation (despite having a dog bite). She helped my baby feel better and I'm so very thankful ❤️

DBVC is an exceptional veterinary clinic. The vets and staff are knowledgable and thorough, and they have always handled my dogs thoughtfully and with kindness. My dogs have seen a few of the vets at DBVC since we moved to the area and I always appreciate the patience and clarity of the vets in communicating diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes. For example (one example of many), one of our dogs recently experienced a health crisis that could not be prevented or stopped, and Dr. Chu moved quickly and compassionately to gather information, interpret the situation and make recommendations, which enabled us to make critically important decisions during a very difficult time. I don't hesitate to recommend them!
