How to Save Money at Modern Animal Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

It’s been nearly a year since Sunny Blue’s first appointment at Modern Animal Culver, and I still feel so grateful to have found this place. When I was searching for a vet—before I even brought Sunny home—I knew I wanted somewhere that combined top medical care with a friendly, stress-free environment. From day one, the staff has been incredible. They answer every question, treat Sunny with so much love & care, and make each visit easy and transparent. Sunny loves the team here! Modern Animal Culver gets 5 stars from both of us!

10 stars if I could. I love Modern Animal generally, but especially our local clinic here in Culver City. My dog is a frequent flier, so we have the annual subscription which is excellent value for money. The care and attention from all the techs and doctors at the Culver location is truly first class - I especially want to shout out Antoine on the team, who treats my Abe better than maybe even I do. It's always easy to get appointments, the doctors always take the time to carefully explain what's going on, why, and offer a menu of solutions and things to try (thanks, Dr. Cruz!). I appreciate the quality of care, price transparency, the ability to use the app to easily book and cancel, access records, text or video chat with a tech on something quickly that doesn't merit a full visit to the vet, etc. I was worried that Modern Animal would be impersonal and not attentive compared to a traditional vet practice, but the experience has been the opposite for us.

We needed a last minute appointment for an allergy shot literally 4 hours before leaving town. We had a cab pickup at 3pm and the only available appointment was 2:30pm. The animal care team was able to accommodate and squeeze us in for a quick appointment at 12pm. Huge stress release for us and our pup to be itch free with the sitter while we are out of town. 💙💙💙💙

I am so grateful for Modern Animal Culver City. My beloved 15 year old cat developed mammary cancer and was declining rapidly. Our previous vet closed their practice and while frantic and emotional I found Modern Animal through a google search. Within 10 mins I had an appointment booked and was able to take her in for an emergency exam just an hour later. Dr. Figueroa and the kind nurse who assisted couldn't have been more understanding, empathetic, and calming in such an upsetting time. I made the tough decision to euthanize my cat after a thorough exam was completed and Dr. Figueroa carefully explained all of our options. We were able to say goodbye to our sweet girl in a quiet room with a comfortable couch and privacy. We weren't rushed at all and were told multiple times to spend us much time as we needed saying goodbye. Although I wasn't ready to let go of my girl, the setting and staff at Modern Animal made the process so personal and as comfortable as possible. I have never encountered such patience and kindness. I write this as I look at a bouquet of yellow roses that were just sent to me by Modern Animal with their condolences. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

First visit, rough start. I had a meltdown due to poor communication with doctor and nurse’s assistant. I would have liked to receive a price quote for the eye medication the doctor prescribed before he prescribed it since I told him a dozen times I wanted something cost effective and economical that I could afford. Secondly, I went in there with the purpose of getting my dog’s prescriptions from his prior vet refilled since my dogs prior vet changed their policy about refilling prescriptions with a 3rd party pharmacy. I communicated this with the doctor and nurse’s assistant only to be handed 3 paper prescriptions at the end of the visit - 2 with only 1 refill and 1 with no refills. My dog has chronic dry eye for the rest of his life and needs eye drops. So that defeats the purpose of me going here when I am already in the same situation with the prior vet changing policy on me. I was told at the end of the appointment, by the manager of the clinic that the doctor doesn’t want to give refills until my dog gets a tear stain test. Well why didn’t the doctor say that from the get go? And one of the prescriptions is just for flea and tick medication and he only gave me one refill on that. What does an eye test have to do with refills for flea and tick medicine??? So we go back next week for a tear stain test in hopes that the doctor will provide refills of eye drops and flea tick medication. Very disappointing and frustrating experience and left a bad taste in my mouth as a first impression.
