How to Save Money at Calabasas Animal Clinic & Holistic Veterinary Center

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Alzate is amazing. She provided my senior pit bull with incredibly compassionate and thorough end of life care. By far the best Vet I have ever been to. She took time to review all her history, watched videos of her having vestibular episodes and put together a comprehensive diagnosis and plan that addressed all of her medical issues from both medical and holistic angles. The care plan she provided helped my dog live longer and have a better quality of life. This clinic was highly recommended by a friend after our previous vet prescribed a bunch of medications with severe side effects, and I am so happy we went here for a second opinion. The prices are fair and reasonable. There is plenty of free and easy parking. It can sometimes be difficult to get an appointment time since they are so busy and popular with pet lovers so it's best to plan ahead make appointments in advance. During our appointments I never felt rushed and they always took time to sit with my dog and me and were very kind. It's absolutely worth it to go here even if it's a farther drive.

This place is a scam. The vet told me it would be $193 For the check up for both of My shelter rescues. Fine. She then went back and apparently did a culture, and when it came time to check out… I was presented with the bill for OVER $500. No mention of the upsell and sending the cultures out, with one of them going out on the dog that didn’t even have an ear infection. I challenged it to them, and she wouldn’t even come out to discuss with me. It was a bait and switch. I will never, ever, step foot in this place again. When the corporation bought this place, it became a money grab.

Hive Stay

Absolute scammers and money grabbing people with no real care or knowledge, just want your money. They’ve moved to Canejo Valley Veterinary Hospital so avoid staying away from there too. We’ve spent thousands of dollars in just one year with these fools and they’re refusing to call my dogs medication because he “needs a physical” so they can charge me $80 to weigh him despite seeing him almost every month if not twice a month since January up until July and now they’re refusing his medication putting him in life threatening risk! Stay away!

I am extremely disappointed with Dr Kumar. I visited this place to get a thimerserol free rabbies vaccine for my small dog. I advised she was on appoquel which is an immunosuppressant and he did not say there would be a terrible vaccine reaction that almost killed my dog and put her through hell for the past two months since a bunch of new complications resulted from the vaccine. This is a disgrace.

They always have such great service, friendly staff and we love our vet. My one complain is you usually have to book an appointment at least 3 weeks out so getting an appointment when a pet is not feeling so well has been a challenge.
