How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough good things about the team at Banfield Pet Hospital on Oswell St. I recently brought in a dog named Thor who had been living in absolutely deplorable conditions and was suffering from severe skin issues. I was really worried about him and unsure how quickly he could be seen, but the staff went out of their way to make sure Thor was seen the very same day. From the moment we arrived, everyone was incredibly compassionate and patient. They took their time not only examining Thor but also walking me through everything that was going on with him. I never felt rushed, and they made sure I understood his condition, the treatment plan, and what we needed to do to get him healthy again. A special thank you to Dr. Michel and the vet assistant Ramon. They were absolutely amazing. They were patient, compassionate, and took extra time teaching me about Thor’s diagnosis and what we could do moving forward to help him heal. They answered all of my questions and made sure I felt confident about his care. The veterinarian and staff were thorough and attentive, prescribing the appropriate medications to treat his skin issues and explaining exactly how and when to use them. They also took the time to educate me on the importance of keeping Thor on heartworm medication, making sure I understood how critical it is for his long-term health. You can truly tell that the team here cares about the animals they treat and the people who bring them in. Their compassion, knowledge, and willingness to help made a stressful situation so much easier. Thor and I are incredibly grateful for the care he received. 🐾💙

THEY JUST WANT YOUR MONEY! I signed up online for my dogs first visit and it gave me a free first visit coupon. I made sure to read the fine print before going and set my appointment for same day. Upon arriving they couldn’t find my appointment in their system and I showed them my appointment on my phone and told the receptionist that I had a coupon for a free first visit. After the nurse did a full intake of my dog and explains to me other services that I was not interested in such as unneeded blood work and to spay my pet she takes my dog to see Dr. Michelle. The nurse comes back with my dog within just a few short minutes and says that her manger Karina told her they’re no longer accepting coupons and that it would be 82$ for my dog to be seen. Very unprofessional to have my pet and I move that far along in the process to reject my dog from being seen. After sharing my frustration with the kind nurse she spoke with her manager and stated if I sign up for the monthly care programs they have they would honor my coupon. Very frustrating and disappointing. It definitely seems they just want my money and are not in it for the care of my dog. I will be taking my dog to another hospital, I could’ve paid the 82$ but that’s not the point.

I had a really great experience bringing my dog, Egg, in for his visit. He needed his vaccine shots along with an allergy shot, and I honestly couldn’t be happier with how everything went. The allergy shot worked almost immediately—he stopped itching right away, which was such a relief to see. The whole appointment was super efficient. I was in and out in about an hour, which I really appreciated. The front desk staff were friendly and easy to talk to, and the doctor was quick, knowledgeable, and didn’t give me any issues when I asked questions. I never felt rushed or brushed off—they answered everything clearly and made me feel comfortable. Most importantly, they were really kind and gentle with Egg, which means everything to me. You can tell they actually care about the animals they’re treating. Overall, such a smooth and positive experience. I’d definitely recommend them!

Horrible. I normally don’t write any reviews but these people don’t care about your animals, just your money. They don’t even know what they’re doing or what you’re there for but they’ll always make sure to push their expensive wellness plans. I took my cats (1yr old and a kitten) here as an emergency because everywhere else was booked and my god was it expensive and it felt like they didn’t even really examine them. I wish they would’ve checked them up more considering it’s 100 and something just to get your pet looked at. My older cat who was sick got a blood test and antibiotics and she’s thankfully doing better. My kitten received an FVRCP vaccine and they scheduled a follow up appointment for a rabies vaccine. When I took my kitten for her follow up appointment they didn’t go over her history before hand (previous vaccines) and they didn’t even know what I was in for. They were about to give her a whole different vaccine. They also said the vaccines would be around $30 each yet they charged me $70 a vaccine. I’ve since taken them to an actual vet and they told me that my kitten was actually too young for the rabies vaccine. I’m grateful nothing bad happened to her but it’s still upsetting. Obviously I don’t know how old a cat has to be for every vaccine but a vet should know, and they should’ve known that my kitten was too young for the vaccine. Overall just be careful and if you’re gonna be spending so much money on a vet just go to an actual vet, not one that’s attached to a store that literally neglects their animals.

Not doing their job correctly, they do not warn you about the risks of your dog. I have to pay thousands now because they never informed me that my dog would need his balls removed and if not he will need to be put down. I’m furious. On top of this they gave my dog a bad shot on his thigh now he has a bump on his leg. Do not take your dog here. I am paying every month dog insurance just for them not to check him good?!!!
