How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I had an appointment scheduled for 1:15 PM today. I mistakenly thought it was at 1:30 and arrived at 1:32 PM. As soon as I realized I would be a few minutes late, I called the clinic to notify them. Upon arrival, I was refused service outright. I respectfully requested to speak with either a manager or a doctor, but I was told the doctor was “in the back” and would not speak with me. I was then passed between three different staff members, all of whom focused solely on the fact that I was approximately 15–17 minutes late, rather than attempting to assist or de-escalate the situation. I fully understand that clinics have scheduling policies. However, the issue here was not the policy — it was the lack of professionalism, empathy, and customer service. At no point was a solution offered, nor was there any effort to help. Instead, I was met with dismissive and argumentative behavior. I ultimately had to leave and seek care at another pet hospital. This experience was disappointing and stressful, especially when seeking care for a pet. I would expect better communication and professionalism from a veterinary clinic. I hope Banfield leadership reviews this situation and provides additional training on customer service and conflict resolution, as this experience fell well below reasonable expectations. Multiple employees were present and standing nearby during this interaction. I did document the situation with photos at the time, but out of respect for employee privacy, I am not posting them publicly.

The Hospital and clinic have been great to us. Well informed during the visit. Took time to console both puppies. Everyone greeted us as we walked into the clinic. All staff was great. You just need to ask questions during the visit and you won't have a negative visit. We've been going here for over 6 years. As far as payment for services we have a plan through Banfield that we pay each month. It's not expensive compared to other insurances or plans. Most of our services we are scheduled for are included in our monthly plan, therefore we don't pay each visit. When payment for certain services are required it is at a discounted price which is affordable.

I scheduled an appointment for my new kitten midnight over a week ago for 11/29 @ 11 am. I They asked if I had prior vet documentation, which I don't because the kitten is young. I mentioned he was found. And I was denied services because I "hadn't had her for 2 weeks yet" I went back to check when he was found and it's been over two weeks. I called back to let them know, NO ANSWER. So I just scheduled it again. But then they call me 10 minutes later this time saying that they can't see new pets. I told them that I had the original appointment already set. And they proceeded to tell me that they couldn't see him, this time because I haven't put up a social media post about having found him? I would have no issue posting it today and showing them had I been made aware? Never have I known this to even be a thing, and I USED to work here over a year ago at the Christown location. So, I don’t know what they’re on about. If you made a scheduling mistake or if you're not seeing new pets JUST SAY THAT. What a waste of time for guests. Calling 30 mins before an appointment set almost 2 weeks ago to cancel it over some made up reason? Be serious. THEY DIDN'T EVEN OFFER TO RESCHEDULE!

I can't say enough good things about Banfield Pet Hospital and the wonderful care they provide for my dogs, Lucy and Milo. The staff truly loves my pets and it shows in everything they do. From the moment we walk in, Lucy and Milo are greeted with genuine warmth and enthusiasm. The veterinarians and support staff are incredibly knowledgeable and compassionate. They take the time to listen to my concerns, thoroughly explain treatment options, and ensure that Lucy and Milo receive the best possible care. Whether it's a routine check-up or an unexpected health issue, I always feel confident that my dogs are in good hands. Banfield Pet Hospital goes above and beyond to create a welcoming and stress-free environment for both pets and owners. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for exceptional veterinary care.

Public safety concern, too busy to care. They failed to remind me to get the RABIES VACCINATION for my Siamese rescue. It's a 3 year shot, so I really needed a reminder and got none. They claim I didn't want to visit and froze her records. Yeah, they see the other cat, but the cat saved from the streets of D.C. and scared of humans they want none of. All I ask of them for her is shots. They are the one's that chose the 3 year shot, which is more dangerous but required fewer visits. If your pet has needs or is not perfect look elsewhere. Last year took my orange tabby for her shots and was diagnosed with an ear infection. The visit seemed to go fine usual 45 minute, but the prescription the doctor gave was a HUGE problem. 3 phone calls to 3 pharmacys and they don't stock it. A second call to the vet and they insist on this medicine and suggest Chewy online, Not in stock on Chewy, reviews saying backordered from the manufacturer since July. Next morning they called to do the check for reactions and I said how the medication had a manufacturing problem and the Vet called me back and made it right found a new medicine available on Chew and was willing to help order.
