How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I started at Banfield South Mountain, which is always a great place. Found that my schnoodle Baxter had more than 20 bladder stones. They were unable to do surgery there, so I called the Banfield Biltmore location, spoke to Ashley, whom has been nothing but wonderful, kind, informational and great at her job. Within minutes she scheduled him for the next day for surgery with Dr Robinson. Dr Robinsin is an outstanding vet…spoke to me personally and explained everything, called me the next day to make sure Baxter was doing ok. I also have him on the wellness plan which helped payed for the visit, the urinalysis, X-rays and blood work. Outstanding customer service, thanks!

The staff at this location have been nothing but kind, gentle, and respectful with my kitten. I was honestly scared because of the reviews, but I can see now that it’s a bunch of lies tbh. I explained to them that I’m in college and my funds are anything but liquid and they helped me figure out ways to get my kitten the help he needed. They are extremely helpful and always handle him with care, if you were scared before you should definitely consider giving them a chance.

The worst location i’ve been to. The staff is rude and unhelpful. I’ve brought two of my dogs here at different times and every time has been a terrible experience. I’ve never even met the doctor who examines my pets, but from what her techs have said about her she sounds uncaring, unmotivated, and generally disinterested in helping animals. Additionally, when i called from my car after my appointment to ask a follow up question, i was on hold for 5 minutes. Then i hung up and called again. Immediately was placed on hold again. So i go inside, and the lady is literally just sitting there on the computer? Like okay i tried calling twice to ask a basic question that could’ve been answered in 30 seconds and you can’t just answer the phone? I’ve only been to a few other locations in the east valley but i always had a very positive experience at those ones.

DO NOT take your pets to the Camelback location! We recently switched to this location from the Desert Ridge one (wonderful staff!) because it's closer to home and have received terrible service and care. We've taken in both of our dogs for issues in which we barely spoke to a vet. All communication was done via their staff. Most recently, we took our female dog in for a cough and sneezing and its been weeks to trying to determine what's wrong with her with us pushing for tests to be done because the staff recommended we just "monitor her." At the last visit, we did some respiratory tests and were told we'd have results in 3-4 days. We have been following up for TWO WEEKS and were continuously told that the lab was taking a long time to find out that the Banfield team did not submit the correct paperwork so the lab didn't perform any testing at all. This was after they told us they were calling the lab everytime we called to ask for results, which means they never did because the lab would have told them they had a paperwork issue. I cannot say anything positive about this location.

Heartbroken and Furious I honestly can’t believe what just happened. I brought my dog in for a simple procedure, and they dropped him off the table. You read that right. They literally dropped my dog. Now he can’t even put pressure on his paw — he’s limping, whimpering, and clearly in pain. Watching him try to walk breaks my heart. When I reached out to them through the “wellness program” chat (which, by the way, I pay $80 a month for), their response wasn’t an apology or an offer to help. Instead, they told me to take him to another animal hospital — one that’s not even covered under their plan. So now I’m supposed to pay another vet out of pocket to fix what they caused? I trusted this clinic with my dog’s care, and they completely let me down. No compassion, no responsibility, just a “not our problem” attitude. My dog deserves better — every pet does. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone who actually cares about their animal
