How to Save Money at Ahwatukee Commons Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The best veterinary clinic ever! Everyone here is incredibly kind, friendly, and genuinely cares about both pets and their owners. They’re honest and to the point, which I really appreciate — no unnecessary upselling, just honest advice and top-notch care. The level of comfort and compassion they provide goes above and beyond. I’ve seen two different vets here, and both were absolutely spectacular! The vet techs are so compassionate — they’d give you and your pet the shirt off their back if they could. The front desk team is always happy, welcoming, and ready to help. I can’t recommend this clinic enough!

We’re new to the area and needed to find a new vet for Hank. From start to finish, the experience was fantastic. They gave Hank a thorough exam and helped me make informed decisions about his ongoing butt issues. The entire staff was incredibly kind and attentive. They reviewed his previous lab work from another vet and even called to explain what the results meant. When his fecal results came back, they provided a detailed explanation of the findings and what to expect moving forward. They were eager to answer all of my questions and made me feel completely supported. Dr. Housley and the staff that day were wonderful—highly recommend this practice!

Unfortunately this will be our last time taking our dog to this place. We had taken our pitbull here at least 3 times and had services done. Our dog has a ton anxiety, he just barks. We were giving medicine for his anxiety before but it didn't work, but we were still able to get his services done that day. This time we explained the medicine doesn't work, and that he does way better when we are not in the room. Dr.Elliot didn't even want to try, and refused to see him unless we reschedule and give him medicine that we'd have to pay for knowing it doesn't work. I've also explained that we've had their previous vets take care of our dog without the medicine and I didn't understand why Dr. Elliot wouldn't even try. Even the vet tech seemed like she didn't want to be around our dog, she even thought our dog was going to charge at another dog in the waiting room and I had to explain he's not vicious, he's just has alot of anxiety, he did exactly what I said and booked it out the building. If you have any "aggressive" breeds or animals that have a hard time at the vet, I'd day to stay clear of this place. They clearly don't listen to owners and will make excuses to not do their job. I understand dealing with animals can be a lot, but your a vet clinic, it's your job to help animals, making excuses to not see them is not the way to go about it.

An awesome Vet clinic for your pet! I appreciate their extra gentle handling of my dog and cat. They always come out happy With that being said, it comes at a cost, at least $70 every visit for a physical checkup, not including treatments/vaccines. TLDR: Great place for your pet, but not for your wallet

Love this clinic! They’ve taken really good care of my vet-hating psychotic cat over the past 5 years and are always very friendly, informative and professional. Also, all the murals of animals doing human things are a nice touch.
