How to Save Money at Princess Anne Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great hospital with great doctors and vet techs. We took our puppy for a new client/wellness exam and we were given all the information needed and he was greeted very well. They were very accommodating with the prescriptions we were using and have an online portal for easy ordering. Dr. Butala was amazing, very patient with all our questions, and answered all of them very thoroughly. She was very gentle when examining our puppy and he was very calm during the whole exam. This will be our place to go to for the rest of our time in VA.

Good things first - Staff up front is very friendly and responsive. The vet I had met is very nice and kind. If I only had to rate for those SPECIFIC things I would rate them 4-5 stars. Bad things - I’ve never had a vet where I felt like I was a sucker just trying to transact for more goods or services I don’t need. You’ll feel this way as soon as you walk-in, products literally everywhere as if it’s a store more-so than a veterinary clinic. I’ve gone to this place twice so far. 1st time - Dog needed a few shots and heart worm test. All in all, 3 or 4 shots plus the visit was over $300. They also wanted to sell me the heart guard specifically, they were going to charge either $150 or $180, I cannot recall the price anymore, but it was one of those two values. ITS $70 ONLINE! I get marking up a little because they should be able to make some money and they have to carry inventory. To literally sell for over 100% what consumers can buy online is robbery in my mind. I asked for a prescription instead. If you don’t ask, they will just sell you it and mention nothing about saving money. The heart guard is what made me skeptical about the whole merchandise thing to begin with. Second visit - a checkup for my dog over $130 for 2 ear swab checks to make sure the ear infection was gone and looked at my dog for a total of less than 1 minute. (Not kidding). $60 of the 130 was for a “ear cleaner” that I didn’t ask for, they just came out with it, labeled it with my dogs name and basically said there’s “excess debris in her ear” they didn’t actually look at her ears, they took two swabs. I told them I had ear cleaner at home and I was told, “this has keto, etc” basically an up sell technique and I didn’t want to ask how much it was so I ended up just going along with it. It was $60, online it’s $25. Again, over 100% markup. They honestly probably get the product for retail price which would be around $13. (I don’t know that for sure) All in all, I needed a vet in the area and I found them online. If you want to be overcharged on normal checkups and then sold things you do not need for OVER TWICE what you can buy it for online then go here. They also tried to sell me dog food during my first appointment which I can only imagine is also marked up crazily. I really don’t know if I would trust them if my dog was seriously ill because I feel like they would recommend whatever the most expensive thing is. If you go here, don’t buy any of their products and ask for a prescription instead, unless you’re ok with being charged over double for what you can get online.

Visiting Virginia Beach with my dog. Ran out of an important prescription and needed the assistance of a local vet. Luckily, I found Princess Anne Veterinary Center. Everyone was courteous and extremely helpful. We had a great visit; much y dog was checked out thoroughly, and Princess Anne staff were great about working with our home vet. I’m glad to know that from now on when we’re visiting the area, they will be there for us.

I recently switched from another Veterinarian that I was not happy with and Princess Anne Veterinary far exceeded my expectations. The front office staff, Vet Tech, Ashley and Dr. Butala and Dr. Dalton were wonderful! I'm so glad I have a place now to take my Pups and know they are cared for.
