How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This is one of the most heartbreaking and disappointing experiences I’ve ever had with a veterinary clinic. I absolutely cannot recommend Banfield Pet Hospital inside PetSmart (Virginia Beach Blvd location). I recently had to make the incredibly difficult decision to euthanize my dog, Daisy. During the appointment, I clearly and repeatedly requested two ceramic paw prints — one for myself and one for my daughter. I confirmed this several times before and immediately after the procedure. Immediately following the euthanasia, one of the staff members scoffed and rolled her eyes at me when she had to correct my invoice because it did not reflect the proper exam fee total. I knew the amount was higher than it should have been, but I was never offered an itemized receipt. This was already an incredibly fragile moment, and the lack of sensitivity was deeply painful. When I returned to pick up Daisy’s ashes, they had only one paw print. When I calmly asked about the second one, the staff member scoffed again, left without explanation, and returned with a single print — insisting that only one had been “ordered,” despite my repeated and very clear requests for two. When I pressed the issue, she took my invoice away from my dog’s remains and threw it in the trash right in front of me. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told the practice manager was “out of town” and they refused to contact her. I was then told the acting manager was not working that day. No one made the slightest effort to help or even acknowledge the mistake. Instead of showing empathy to a grieving client who had just lost his dog, the staff became defensive, dismissive, and argumentative. At one point, another employee who had used emotionally charged language toward me became upset when I expressed frustration, denied her own words, and refused further assistance. The hypocrisy and lack of professionalism were staggering. I left heartbroken — with no second paw print, no support, and no compassion from the people who should have cared the most in that moment. The euthanasia itself was already painful enough, but the way Banfield handled the aftercare and communication made the experience significantly worse. The lack of compassion, accountability, and basic professionalism during such a vulnerable time is unacceptable. I trusted Banfield to handle my dog’s euthanasia and memorial with dignity. That did not happen. I truly hope Banfield Corporate addresses this seriously so no other grieving pet owner has to experience what I went through. Edit: look at this paw print. They didn’t even clean her paw from the ink first. I trust them to handle this with dignity and instead………

My cat, Mister, had an issue and they were able to get him in the next day! The front desk people were wonderful and extremely kind. They definitely helped calm my anxiety. Dr. Carpenter came out and gave me the rundown and all was well! Mister isn’t the biggest fan of going to the vet, but I felt that the staff here took care of him as if he was one of their own pets. HIGHLY recommend them!

I recently had my son (cat) checked out from a horrible cold. I was already anxiety ridden since I’m a new cat mom but he also looked so bad like he was in pain. Eyes half closed, stuffed nose, lethargic, mouth open to breathe. I brought him over and he was completely taken care of. Dr Hammett listened and calmed me down and provided some antibiotics and my baby boy was back to being a menace within 3 days. Banfield Hospital even called to do a check up. All I can say is thank you!

One of the best Banfield's I have ever been to. The entire staff is caring, knowledgeable, and genuinely cares about my pets and me. When we had to say goodbye to our dog, everyone was amazingly supportive and kind. I couldn't have wished for a better care team. My other pets continue to come here, and setting up appointments is easy. Would give 10 stars if I could.

It's been a while since monkey butt was seen. As soon as she walked in the door, she felt at home, everyone treated her as there own, not just like another pet. That's why she's been going here for 16 years. There's no other place we or she would trust. Thank you for being there, to take care of our monkey butt.
