How to Save Money at Tidewater Trail Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

When you see the vets, they seem to be caring and spend time talking with you. The disappointment is with two of my dogs they treated for years. These unfortunate events happened years apart, and I said after the first time, I would never go back (shame on me). Two different sick dog emergencies approx 10 yrs apart that ended in euthanization, and they could not get either one in for an appointment. This is a rough time in the owners life, with the loss of a family canine member. I can not say enough about Ferry Farm Animal Hospital. I have honestly wanted to switch practices because they have always been there in my time of need, I'm not saying Tidewater is bad, but after being a patient for years, they were not there twice in my time of need. :(😞 I honestly hope they can correct this so others do not experience the same thing!

I went to this vet several months ago with a reptile. He was misdiagnosed and treated for something he didn’t have. They didn’t have proper medication in stock. Do NOT go here if you have an exotic reptile. I had an amazing experience at Hartwood animal hospital. They have up to date medical care. My pet received light laser therapy and is now thriving .

Had my dog neutered about 2 weeks ago. Still waiting for a follow up call. As others have reviewed, they don't care. Tried to tell me my pup had a scrotal infection, really it was razor burn. Young people manning front have absolutely no personality and lack of experience shows. Seriously for what they charge, better off letting the SPCA do it. Young vet tech said my dog had no stitches, when we showed them a picture of my dogs swollen scrotal sac, tried to tell me it was the dog licking and if stitching was open there would be an extra charge? (wait awkward vet tech said dog had no stitches) Also charged me 35 bucks for a $2.00 soft cone. Avoid!

When I first took my dogs there we had 6 (or 7?) dogs and took them in pairs on and off all day for appointments. In the 2nd set of pups I had a one that was scared of men - especially taller men - and deep voices? He was so scared. Dr. Greg (tall with a deeeep voice) crawled on the floor for 30 minutes (!!!!!) while discussing all our questions and concerns while slowly gaining trust. Dr. Andi is equally loving and wonderful with our pups. We left them for a few years for a closer vet when we had kids and couldn't handle the 1.5 hour round trip drive but we're so happy to be back! Did I mention they are almost always exactly on time?! A vet on schedule? Amazing! Their 3rd doc, Dr. C...something is very straight forward and no-nonsense. Empathetic to the pups we bring and answers all our questions as well. Like Drs. Andi & Greg would bring on someone who wasn't great - this is THE VET you need to trust with your animals.

Great doctors and prices are more than fair. They truly care about my pets and everyone is helpful and kind. Love that this is now my vet! Update: still with this vet and still very happy. Highly recommend them. We also now take our dogs for grooming here and they do awesome! Our poodle is very skittish and needs light sedation, and they do great.
