How to Save Money at VEG ER for Pets

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Unfortunately my 7 yr old Golden Retriever passed on the way to V.E.G on Christmas but I just want to say that all the staff members we had contact with were nothing but nice. They put us in a nice private room to say good bye to our boy and go over the options for everything after. I can't remember her name but the woman that was with us was lovely. I would definitely recommend them but just know that it is not like a typical ER it's all one room and other owners are around when you walk in. Really cool concept to be able to stay with your pet but not the best in this scenario but still 5 stars. Attached some photos of our handsome boy!

Forever Grateful for This Amazing Team! There are moments as a pet parent when fear takes over, and all you can do is hope the people caring for your dog truly see him the way you do. That’s exactly what we felt walking into VEG ER and exactly why we will never forget Dr. Morales, Dr. Parkinson, Dr Delaplane, and the entire team of vet techs who cared for our sweet Thor. From the very beginning, they treated Thor with such tenderness and patience while he was struggling with his tummy issues. They made him feel safe, welcomed, and protected, something we desperately needed in such a stressful moment. Dr. Parkinson went above and beyond in a way that still brings us so much gratitude. She didn’t just recommend an ultrasound specialist, she found one who could evaluate Thor the very next day and coordinated everything to ensure a smooth, safe transfer to another local ER. Knowing Thor was headed to a trusted ER with all the details handled gave us a sense of relief we can’t even put into words. They also made sure we had a private room so we could stay with Thor overnight. Being able to sit beside him, comfort him, and let him know he wasn’t alone meant everything to us on his first night. Thor stayed another night without us, and the staff didn’t just check in; they gave us thoughtful, frequent updates throughout the night and day that eased our worries and helped us breathe again. Their care extended far beyond medical treatment; it was emotional support when we needed it most. Because of their expertise, compassion, and genuine love for animals, Thor is now home, healing, and sleeping peacefully. We will always remember how this team cared for him, and for us, with such heart. If you’re looking for an ER veterinary team that treats your pet like family, VEG ER in Centerville the place. They gave us reassurance when we were scared, hope when we felt helpless, and ultimately, they helped ensure Thor was safe.

My cat had been in labor for a few hours before I started worrying and took her to the emergency vet, where she finally gave birth. The people who worked at VEG that night were truly the most amazing veterinary techs and doctor in the world. Even though they were busy and unlike other places that wouldn’t take us they welcomed us with open hearts. As soon as I walked in with my cat, a tech and the vet immediately came over, took her from my arms, and started caring for her right away. I’ve never seen this level of urgency and priority even in human emergency rooms. They were kind, calm, and you could tell they genuinely love animals. When they were doing the ultrasound, I watched the tech who was holding my cat gently kiss her head a few times , you don’t do that unless you really, really care. ( I think their name was Logan) Ashley and Katie, the techs who worked with us most, were incredible. They set us up in a quiet room with my cat and my two daughters since it was way past midnight and my kids were exhausted. They even set up a little bed for us to rest on while we waited for my cat to give birth. My children got a couple of snacks from the station, and everyone treated them (and all of us) with so much kindness. Despite the stress of the situation, my kids felt safe and calm there and so did I. The vet on call that night was amazing too. I wish I remembered her name, but I won’t forget her kind face when she took my cat from me the moment we walked in, introduced herself, and got straight to work. As soon as we arrived, all the stress I had been carrying just melted away. Ashley and Katie took the time to teach me and my daughters how to care for the kittens. They sat with us through the birth, helped with the newborns, made sure they were warm, and checked that they were nursing properly. I want to give a special shout-out to them, and honestly to everyone there. We had some feeding issues the next day, so I sent my husband back, and once again they took great care of us. They sent him home with everything we needed and even texted me later to check on the kittens. Who does that? Truly angels. I highly, highly recommend this place. The staff there are absolute angels sent to care for our beloved pets. Thank you, VEG ladies — you are amazing.

The Veg team is amazing and the open floor concept was my favorite. You arecwith your pet the whole time which helped my dog remain calm and feel better. I credit Dr Kit Parkinson for seeing my dog go into a seizure and jumping into action with the incredible and caring veg team. Highly recommend veg for pet emergency services

Loving a pet enough to make the decision to free them from an existence of pain rather than prolonging their stay for us is one of the hardest to make. Pile on top of that the fact that decision time inevitably happens at the most inopportune moment and few people have a relationship with an emergency vet. We had to make one of those decisions this morning at 1:20 am. Thankfully, our struggle was supported by the incredible staff at the VEG ER for Pets location in Centreville, VA. Dr. Pedro Delaplane gave us the terrible news in the most compassionate loving way possible. The entire staff—the rest of whose names we were too distraught to gather—was fantastic and worked together as a highly cohesive, professional team of caregivers. Our baby was very well cared for and although our decion had to be to help her end her suffering making us sad she's gone, we are very grateful we found VEG in our time of need!
