How to Save Money at STEEL VETERINARY SERVICES
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot thank Steel Vet enough for the incredible care they gave my dog, Star. She was suddenly very sick, peeing blood, not eating, lethargic, and even had a brown discharge. Even though they were fully booked, they didn’t hesitate to take us in as an emergency. I drove a hour to see them. From the moment we walked in, everyone was kind, calm, and compassionate. Dr. Bob carefully examined Star and quickly diagnosed her with pyometra. He explained everything to me clearly from start to finish, which gave me so much comfort during such a terrifying moment. The reception staff were amazing as well, despite how busy the clinic was, they still treated us with patience and genuine concern. Thanks to their quick action and heartfelt care, Star is now home resting safely, and I am beyond relieved. Thank you, Dr. Bob, and thank you to the wonderful team at the front desk. Your kindness truly made all the difference. I’m so grateful for everything you did for my girl. ❤️

I am so grateful for my veterinary team. After a terrible experience at another hospital, they were there for me and my dog every step of the way. Dr. Bob personally called me first thing Monday morning as soon as he was back in the office to check on us, and that kind of compassion and dedication is rare to find. The staff is always caring, supportive, and truly puts their patients first. I feel blessed to have such a wonderful, compassionate team looking after my dog.

My experience with this clinic was extremely disappointing. Dr. Peter Horner DVM is not allowed to be a vet!!! I drove all the way from Pittsburgh because my Ragdoll breeder, who has been raising this breed for over 15 years, strongly recommended this clinic as the best place to help my kitten as their patients for 15 years. My Ragdoll kitten had just been rehomed after neutering three weeks ago. He has been stressed and our previous vet prescribed Clavamox for his coughing, sneezing, and runny nose. It helped, but not completely, and I came here as per our breeder recommendation hoping for proper follow-up treatment and answers. When the doctor came in, the appointment lasted no more than two minutes. He asked a few quick questions, examined my kitten, and suggested proceeding with vaccines. I repeated my concerns about the ongoing sneezing and runny nose. Instead of explaining the situation or discussing a treatment plan first like a normal doctor, he suddenly started quickly naming some medications without any explanation of what they are, why they would help, or what to expect. I didn’t even catch what they are. As the pet owner, I have every right to ask questions. And I simply asked if I should call the breeder to confirm the name of the medication she recommended, since she has long experience with Ragdolls and her cats are patients at this clinic. And doctors at this clinic always prescribe her kittens this medication. The doctor became visibly irritated immediately, then silently walked out of the room and closed the door without saying anything at all. No diagnosis, no plan, no explanation. Seriously?? Are we in daycare? After that, I started to look for any other personnel at the clinic by myself, went to reception, but no one tried to assist us, offer another doctor, or even clarify what happened. Instead, we were asked to leave and given a refund. My kitten received zero help. No veterinarian should walk away from a sick animal without communicating or answering questions. A doctor has a responsibility to explain what they want to prescribe, why, and how it will help. Communication and basic respect are essential in medical care. And if you cannot bear with people who ask questions - it means you have no right to work in this field!!! I left shocked, upset, and without any answers — after driving a long distance specifically because I trusted this clinic. The worst vet clinic experience I have ever had. I absolutely do not recommend this clinic and especially Dr. Peter Horner DVM to anyone. I will file a complaint for the AAVSB and hope that this doctor will have a consequences after his actions.

I brought my dog in after noticing she was having trouble urinating, and the team here was absolutely wonderful from start to finish. They were kind, professional, and took the time to explain everything clearly. The doctor quickly diagnosed a urinary tract infection and started treatment right away. Within a few days, my dog was feeling so much better! I really appreciate how gentle and caring everyone was, they treated her like family. I’m so thankful to have a veterinary clinic I can trust for great care and compassion!
