How to Save Money at Ryan Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Ryan Veterinary Hospital is amazing. We took our dog there for second opinion and am so thankful we did. Our Honey was diagnosed with a portosystemic intrahepatic liver shunt. We live in Akron,Ohio and were basically told there was nothing they could do with her shunt because it was to large to fix. She would only live to be around 3years. Thankfully we found them through research. It turns out Honey was a candidate for a procedure called Coil Embolization. She had the surgery on April 26th. She did well through the surgery but had some complications with her blood clotting. They knew exactly what she needed to help her blood clot. The vet Dana Clark and her team of 8 others were all very knowledgeable and compassable the whole 5 day my dog was in ICU. They called twice a day with updates and would immediately let us know if there was any issues. Thank you Ryan Veterinary Hospital for taking such good care of our Honey. I especially would like to let Dana Clark and her team for helping my family through this difficult time.

We had a really good experience there. Our dog was having to pee constantly and crying non stop on the Dec 23rd. Our dog has Degenerative Myelopathy, they took her back right away, fit her for a harness to help her walk which has been so helpful, got her on meds for her urine infection. We had to wait a long time but that is part of going to any ER. She left better than how she came in and was able to rest when we got home. So glad they are open 24/7.

Before and during my dogs procedure they were very kind and communicative. They called with updates multiple times the day of surgery. However after his procedure we could not get ahold of anyone. We left multiple voicemails and send emails. Our dog got a staph infection on his wound and we needed help. We ended to taking him to our local animal hospital where they helped him. After attempting to let the hospital know and schedule a follow up we still never once heard back. No follow up customer care.

5 starts simply isn't enough! on christmas eve, my pup became very lethargic. it was mild but i just knew something was wrong with her. our local pet urgent care dismissed her symptoms and sent us home. the next day (christmas), she was struggling to walk on her own and we again went to our local pet urgent care. a different vet examined her and determined that what she was suffering from was likely neurological. she advised us to see a veterinary neurologist ASAP and helped call around to find an animal hospital that 1) was open and 2) had a neurology department. she was able to get us in at uPenn. when we got to penn, dr. lam examined her and agreed with the urgent care vet that she needed a neurology consult, but advised that that wouldn't be until the morning. he recommended that we admit her and we did. he even let us go back into the ER and say goodbye to her before we left, which was so kind. the following morning at 7am, dr. black (neurologist) called to let me know that my pup had lost sensation in her front paws overnight. she was slowly becoming paralyzed :( he suspected a spinal injury and advised that we do an MRI on her. he also let me know that he was moving her to the front of the line since she was declining so quickly. i gave him the green light and he let me know that he'd be in touch around 10am. around that time, he called to let me know that they found a severely herniated disc in her back that would require emergency surgery to correct. he had already called in the surgical team and just needed our blessing before proceeding. it was an extremely difficult and emotional decision to make because he explained the possible complications and associated costs – we also didn't know if she would ever walk again, even with surgery. he reassured us that if this were his dog, he would do surgery. we again gave the green light and he said we'd hear back around 3-4pm. at 2:30pm, he called and let us know that her surgery went well and that none of the complications we'd worried about occurred. she was recovering well, breathing on her own and he was more optimistic than not that she'd walk again. we were ecstatic and so thankful for their quick actions for our pup – had they reacted any slower, and she may have been completely paralyzed. in the days that followed, i was updated every morning and every night on her progress. she was doing incredibly well! finally, today, she was allowed to come home. when i got to the hospital, she was out within minutes – and walking (assisted)! i wasn't sure i'd ever see her walk again, but especially not this fast. the uPenn team saved my baby during a time of the year when most people are home with their families & not even thinking about work. i'm eternally grateful for the entire team and for the life my baby gets to live now :) i will never go anywhere else for pet care!
