How to Save Money at Ani-Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Amazing vet and staff. I switched all 6 of my ferrets to Dr. Feinsod when we moved to PA and the care here is beyond great. Over the last couple months two of my older ferrets ended up needing surgery (for separate illnesses at separate times). Dr. Feinsod took the time to explain everything and answer any questions I had. Both of my babies are currently doing great, and I absolutely credit that to them having a good vet who is clearly knowledgeable about small animal care. The techs and office staff are so kind and they always manage to get us in when we have an emergency. I’m so glad I brought my babies here and I don’t intend to ever take them anywhere else. A good ferret vet is not easy to find. 💜

I began coming to this practice with my bunny because the rescue I adopted her from brought her to Dallastown from Maryland because of Dr. Feinsod's extensive knowledge of exotics. There are very few vets that are truly knowledgeable in the treatment of exotics. I have also been bringing my dog and cats for care. Dr. Feinsod is very knowledgeable and takes time to share his knowledge. They are a small, busy practice with a knowledgeable and caring Dr.

Could have sworn I already wrote a review for this place. This vet is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I will be willing to drive however far is necessary to see him, he is so well researched & gives you all of the facts you may need. He doesn't push anything on you, just tells you what your options are & what those courses of action will look like, how it might have worked for others, etc. Takes plenty of time to explain everything & answer any questions. It is really amazing how educated he is in a field (exotics) where the information isn't necessarily as straight forward as cats or dogs. It can be really hard to find an exotic vet that really knows exotics, but I know my babies are in the best of hands here. Fully worth the 40 minute drive it is for me now, & I would drive longer for this level of high quality care.

Do not ever take your reptile/amphibian to this facility. Within five minutes of meeting the doctor I was ready to walk out the door. He was arrogant, rude, and kept advising many things that are super inaccurate for reptile care! I only came to this facility because my regular vet was away and I was worried for my reptile. He told me metabolic bone disease can be reversed with zoomed lights (metabolic bone disease can never be reversed only prevented from it getting worse with proper care), he told me lizards need hay?!?! And that bearded dragons are not desert animals?!?! I have a degree in veterinary and biomedical sciences and worked in the field for 7 years, and I have NEVER encountered a doctor this uneducated about exotics. He is a danger to your reptile if you listen to his advice. I will never be back even with my dog or cat because this doctor cannot be trusted! That being said other staff at the facility were friendly and kind.

This practice was so disappointing for me. My rabbit was due for the RHDV2 vaccine in August but unfortunately a bunch of veterinary practices do not do this vaccine due to low demand. Originally where I'm from, this vaccine is a requirement and it can be given the same day as the yearly checkup. I spent hours calling various veterinary clinics and eventually was referred to this clinic. When I called, they told me I'd be able to get the RHDV2 vaccine. I understood that I would have to schedule my rabbit for his yearly checkup but I called them 3 times verifying that I'd be able to get the vaccine the same day as the checkup and explained it was about a 3 hour drive away from where I live to get to this veterinary practice. I was told every time that I'd be able to get the vaccine. I drove the 3 hours only for me to arrive and have them tell me that he could get his yearly checkup but I'd have to come back at a later time when they have the “rabbit vaccine clinic.” This was something I was never told about during any of my phone calls. I told them I didn't want to continue with my appointment because my rabbit wouldn't be getting what he was actually there for anyways, and I told them I'd just take him to his old vet because I knew he could get the vaccine there; I was just trying to avoid it due to it being over 4 hours away. One of the workers then kept telling me that no matter what my rabbit would have to get his yearly checkup anyways when he gets the vaccine and it seemed she was really trying to push me to go through with the appointment even though I explained that I knew that but his original vet would be willing to do the checkup AND vaccine so I'd rather spend my money on a place that I know will do what he needs. The last thing that frustrated me was I asked for my $60 prepayment back because I didn't bail on my appointment; I showed up but was given false information prior. They did return my $60 but I feel like if I didn't say something, they would not have even brought up returning it. Obviously I'm not bashing the veterinarian because I didn't get to the point of meeting him, but I don't appreciate that I put my rabbit under unnecessary stress. He refuses to poop or eat in the car so this whole adventure put him at high risk for GI stasis.
