How to Save Money at Riverbend Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My 12.5 yo pup had a noticeable change in his breathing. Upon examination Dr March was able to give me a diagnosis and suggestions to help him be safe and comfortable. It's evident that Dr March cares deeply about animals from her easy manner with them. This clinic is a wonderful addition for folks who can't get into their primary clinic. Thank you for the wonderful care!

When our big boy Balto started showing signs of lameness on his front right paw, our home vet couldn't schedule us for at least three days, but I saw Riverbend Veterinary as a relatively close emergency vet care location, not even realizing they were such a newly established veterinary resource in the area. We showed up around 2:30pm, expecting to have to wait for other pets being seen for emergencies. When we arrived, the nice person at the front desk accommodated our need to have a seat away from other pets to minimize excitement, so we were offered a chair away from the main seating area. A few other pets came in with more critically urgent needs, and understandably, they were prioritized. Once it was clear that these pets were going to require care through the end of the work day, we were told as much as soon as the staff knew we wouldn't be able to be seen the same day, and gladly accepted an appointment the morning after at 10:30am, and were allowed to leave without needing to worry about staying until closing time - the unambiguous transparency was very appreciated, and we were still given instructions on what to look out for, how to care for our boy, despite not having been officially seen - they clearly care very much about every individual pet whose care they are entrusted with. The next day, we were seen promptly at the 10:30am time slot, and Balto was accommodated with a soft blanket to lie on so he could be comfortable. Very soon after sitting in the room, our vet tech came in for vitals, and accommodated Balto when it was clear he wasn't comfortable with the stethoscope, allowing him the space he needed to feel comfortable - they were very respectful and observant of his anxiety condition, and didn't pressure him in any way that made him feel threatened. Not long after the tech visit, Dr. March came in and worked with us to figure out an exam process that Balto would be comfortable with, and we ended up walking him out in the front plaza outside the entrance. Again, once Balto needed to be physically examined, he was only touched physically as much as was necessary to determine the site of the issue, and I was allowed to articulate his hind leg to eliminate the possibility that it was also injured. A very short wait in the exam room later, Balto was drafted a care plan and appropriate prescriptions to assist in his healing process at home, as well as things to look out for during the healing process. The instructions were very clear, and we were sent home shortly after with Rx in hand (which were shockingly affordable given the circumstances) and we were on our way home. Thank you Riverbend for being available and transparent for our big guy!

They were able to get my dog Sparta in when every other vet was booked out, and emergency vets were at capacity. It is a newer place that is super clean and professional. They have convenient parking, which is not always the case in that area. Most importantly, the staff and doctor were great. They gave her excellent care and even found a different issue than the one I brought her in for, that I wasn't aware of. Highly recommended.

New clinic that was recommended after I couldn’t take my dog to 5 other locations after an emergency. They were able to accept me immediately for a walk in and were great! Staff was friendly and attentive and the doctor was thorough and compassionate, our little guy is in a much better state. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.
